This is a system I use as a back up and for storage and to be honest I use really but just the other day I decided to finally back up some files I had on my usb drive and when I switched it on I immediately restarted and thought I'd just play about in bios.

Obviosly the stock speed is set to 3.16 GHz and I soft overclocked it to 3.495. I think the bus speed was set to 368MHz so I just stuck that straight to 400MHz without touching anything else.

surprisingly the system was stable at 3.8GHz.

I didn't touch the vcore at all and I'm now going to start playing with this a bit more when I get back home.

compared to my gaming rig which is using the AMD 955 chip that's overclocked to 3.6GHz and has trouble with 3.8GHz I'm surprised that this chip is stable and with a lower temp of around 30 degrees.

This chip was a replacement from the original so it's a E0 revision which I think helps. This system is also using 4x 800MHz ram whereas the 955 is only using 2x 1600MHz (although I think there's something wrong with these sticks).

Does anyone know how much more potential the E8500 has?

can I unlock any more threads?

Id be interested to know what settings you used in your BIOS.

Im looking at overclocking my E8500, i have 4gb of DDR2 1066 memory

My major question is, will the standard fan keep the cpu cool enough when it is overclocked or do i need to upgrade to a better one??

Well remember clock for clock the 8500 is about 15% faster than a Phenom II.

So in effect at 3.8Ghz, its as fast as your 955 would be @4.3Ghz..!!!!!

Of course thats only in apps/games that only make use of 2 cores.....

4 to 4.2 Ghz seems to be the maximum, with very good cooling, that the 8500's top out at.

Mine could probably do more, but the gains wouldn't be worth the time tinkering and testing, 4Ghz is plenty of power.

stocks would get the job done for you to turn it on but if you want performance then spending £40 on a cooler is well worth it and you don't really need to spend that much anymore.

To the other posters -

considering I set the cpu up to 'crazy' on my rog rampag, then manually changed the bus would you reckon the voltage was on auto or something?

I don't think it would matter because even from 3.16 - 3.95 is still nearly the same step as from 4.95 - 4.8 so all I can think is that the voltage has to be on an auto or something.

when I looked in cpu-z I'm sure when I looked at it, it didn't seem high.

but considering the temps I have now and what possible voltage increase I have left you've got to admit that 4.2 seems an understatement.

I know the chip should run fine at 500 x 8 but the chip will hit a wall around 540 with about 7, but obviously you'll lose out on the multiplier in the long run.

I'm think 460 should be pretty good to aim at around 1.4 v @ 9.5

too ambitious?
