Hey Peeps,

Just got me a new HD4890. Upgraded from a 320 meg 8800 GTS and the differnece is amazing. Crysis flies on full settings. And even GTA IV is working perfect on full settings.

I've never tried to overclock at GFX card before but would like to give it a go on as I read in reviews this one can go quite a bit. I recently overclocked my my CPU to 3.3 ( Q6600 ) and Ram at 1100mhz ( 8 gig OCZ Gold ) on a P5Q Pro.

I really don't know where to start so if anyone could give me some pointers that would be ace.

I have a XFX HD4980 ( not the overclocked edition as I wanted to do it myself )

Thanks,

Kev

The link you sent me is really good, I'm running it right now and slowly pushing it up. Temps about 75 - 76 on stock, about the same with 10mhz increase on core. The link doesn't really say how long to test it for i've been doing it for about 3 mins and seeing what it levels out at. Do you think that's long enough as when overclocking cpu on prime it's best to be left for 20mins or so ???

Thanks again,

Kev

When overclocking a CPU, you should stress-test it for five hours or more, as it's a more important component and other parts come into play when determining stability.

For a graphics card, I usually run about half an hour of Furmark on 'Extreme burning mode' and play some games with it to see what the temperatures look like.

Thanks for the quick reply mate. Well i'm pusing it up slowly but surely with riva tuner. I'm planing on doing test for 10 mins at a time to see what the temp is saying and when it hits about 85oc I was gonna leave it at that as it says in the article that 90 is not a good temp to have it at. Do you think i'll be safe enough doing that or do you think I should run it for longer, when it hits 85 I was gonna do a full test as you say for about 30 mins. Once in done with the core I was gonna push memory up much the same way.

Another thing, there is nothing in the article about fan speeds so this is just running on whatever it's set to stock. I'm not sure if the fan will auto adjust to temps ?

i'm hoping to get out like 950mhz core and 4600mhz on the ram like it says in the article. This is my first time messing about with a GPU and don't really wanna see smoke as I just spent an arm n leg on it. What would you expect to be a decent OC from it. Think i'm hoping for too much and also what happens if I do push this too farr, will it fry or just reset ?

Thanks Again,

Kev

Not at all man, i'm really not sure either. That was probably gonna be my next question tho. I was kinda under the impression as it's basically a HD4870 that any aftermarket cooler that would fit one of them would probably do a HD4890. No really sure tho will have to look about. I want to see more people overclocking their HD4890 so I can know a bit more to expect tho.

Meh 930mhz on core looks to be my max. Getting slight gaphical glitches on furmark so leaing it at 930mhz until I get a better cooler. Gonna try pushing ram now. Still considering it was £20 more for the pre overclocked XFX I have this running faster than it's core of 875mhz so why bother buying one of them eh.

I have the asus 4890 and max I can get is 940mhz on gpu although using furmark there is slight glitching. After this I get a graphic driver error. Memory I can push a bit higher. Left it on 900mhz gpu and 1000 memory for now which is still a good improvement. This is just using the standard catalyst overdrive

Yeah, according to internet speculation, the 4890 can take 4870 coolers because the screw holes are the same. As for the stock fan, you can control the speed in either CCC or RivaTuner, but left to it's own devices it will sound like a wind turbine.

If you overclock the card too far, you might see artifacts (coloured blocks or tearing on the screen) or the card might just stop outputting a signal - this happened to me a few times this afternoon when I've been pushing my 260 a wee bit too hard.

The main thing that will kill a graphics card is heat, so watch your temps. I wouldn't let it above 90c; 85ish fully loaded with an overclock sounds pretty good to me.

I tried the autotune and when it had finished it set the gpu to 965mhz and memory to something like 1150mhz. Damn computer locked up in the first minute of furmark lol. Am guessing the settings where way too high. I do wonder why I can only push my card to something like 930mhz and even then see a few artifacts and others I hear are pushing it well above 950mhz even upto a 1000mhz. Would my power supply be a limiting me at all being only a 500w coolermaster extreme?

It more then likely overcooked the memory.

Run Overdrive autotune again (as on the 4850, at least, this over volts the GPU).

Leave the GPU at whatever it sets and lower the memory to say 1050 and try furmark.

Its the gpu thats the problem i think. Using furmark and overclocking whilst its running its fine upto about 930mhz and the memory set to standard. Anything over this on the gpu and black dots appear. At 950mhz the driver crashes.

If the Accelero twin turbo cooler can fit on it then i might get a 4890 and overclock it.
