hey im getting the parts for my new pc on Friday and want to over clock the processor its a Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz. this is my first Intel processor and my first over clock so i wondered if there is a really simple guide or if i can use anyone else's settings or are they to variable, i can post more details on any part of the pc if needed, mobo cpu cooler ram etc if needed. thanks for any help as i have no idea where to start.

I think it's like a one step process for initial overclocking, go into the bios and into the overclocking section. I'm not sure what it's called but it's a matter of just adjusting a value to change the clock, the rest does itself.

it dosent use a lot of the other settings its just a multiplier and voltage all else is left at default unlike the non extreme which is what i have and i dont get how the other settings scale and i dont want to damage the processor finding out

Been playing around with it on my I7-965 and its not stable on air @ 4Ghz (this is with a Noctua HP12 & dual fans as well!!).

3.75Ghz is stable with no voltage increases.

But TBH apart from benchmarks you will not even notice the extra speed so IMO not even worth doing unless you do not mind increasing voltages as well and have an extreme cooling solution.

O/Cs of 3.6 and above require some tweaking, as opposed to Auto. There are no easy shortcuts in overclocking unfortunately - settings should be taken as a suggestion and each CPU is different. That said, reading forums such as...

...and seeing what other people have achieved using comparable hardware is always a good start. While you're not to take everything as gospel, these provide some good starting points.

re

its nice to overclock but i leave my settings at stock...i will only overclock when i need it....

At the moment there is NO GAME out there that my system cannot handle and play at full settings at stock speeds...infact this antec 1200 case is so cool you actually can feel the chill of it..honest

He's lying. It's not that easy unless you're just guessing.

The easy way to overclock is to look at what other people are getting at max, set for a little bit lower, up the voltages a bit, and cross your fingers.

What you should be doing realistically is isolate and find the limits for each part of the system. Find out how fast the RAM can go, how fast the processor can go, the fastest RAM settings the system can manage. Then try and put them all together and see if you need to nudge things down a bit. Follow the stickies :)

That i7 board does make it easier because there doesn't seem to be any real choice over a ram divider.

There's only 2 real settings for speed since the multiplier is locked. Setting the bus speed, and choosing one of two ram dividers.
