The other day I overclocked my i5-2500K to 4.4ghz. for the first couple of days it was fine, but after that it would run for 10 minutes and then crash and everything would freeze up. i have now put it back to default 3.3 and is working fine.

any ideas why this has happened?

What are your CPU temps under extreme load, sounds like it may have overheated, so run ibt or prime95 to check your Max Full load temps at default speed, then re test with your overclock settings, also check your system event logs for Whea errors which will tell us if you had enough voltage for the OC.

I was playing COD: Ghost on max settings and it was at around 40-45.

Also, i only put it on turbo mode and it allowed me to select between 4.0 - 4.8

It's not overheating...it simply unstable overclock.

OP you need to increase the vcore voltage if you want have overclock stable beyond 4.00~4.20GHz. Go into bios, and try manually set vcore to 1.280v~1.350v.

1.350v should most definitely keep 4.40GHz stable no problem, but you might want to further drop voltage and find the lowest voltage on the vcore that can keep the overclock stable without crashing for help lowering power consumption, which in turn would lead to lower temp as well.
