Hi . I have a AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+and i was wanting to Overclock it My Mainboard is a Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Model GA-7VAX-A
BIOS Vendor Award Software International, Inc.
BIOS Version KT400 - 42302e31

(Sorry about copy and paste)

I have tryed it and it seems to work fine running at 2600+ speeds ,but my benchmarks were an average of 4600 on 3dmark 03 i have a XFX 5900xt card.
When i set CPU to defult i got score of 5500 ???Why is this ? What am i doing wrong?

Please help.

are the AGP and pci bus's locked on your motherboard? i think if you overclock the AGP and pci slots it may have a negative effect rather than a positive one

Hi

Unfortunately you have the Via KT400 chipset which isn't good for overclocking

When you overclock your CPU by increasing the FSB speed this also increases the speed of your AGP and PCI slots, overclocking your cards plugged into these

Some motherboards offer the option to lock your PCI and AGP busses. This means that you can overclock your CPU without overclocking your expansion slots

You might find an option in the BIOS called "AGP Frequency" or similar - set this to 66MHz. There might be an option to lock PCI & AGP busses too.

Thankyou.
My card is grx card is a 5900xt.soon to b a 6800gs agp.u say these run at 66mhz?
i just wanted to clarify.

Why is it that when i try to overclock my CPU the AGP goes up?Whats the reason behind it?

This is because the cpu, memory, PCI and agp buses are all linked. Up the cpu and all the others follow.

So how do i get the most out of overclocking my CPU with a KT 400.

Your cpu runs at 2000mhz which is 133 (fsb) x 15 (cpu multiplier); if the cpu is multiplier unlocked you could try 2167mhz which is 13 x 166 (which is a 2700); which can be set by the dipswitches. Although this seems to be only a small increase in speed the extra memory bandwidth will certainly make a difference.

But before you try this you need to find out if the cpu is multiplier unlocked; it will be if it was manufactured before week 39 of 2003. If you don't know this then you can check by switching off the PC resetting the multiplier dipswitches to 13 and see if the the cpu is reported as a 2100; if so it's unlocked and you can try 13 x 166; if stable try 13.5 x 166; 14 x 166 - you may need to up the core voltage to aid stability.

I would also suggest you make sure you have at least PC2700 RAM and a good cpu cooler before OCing.

Hope This helps

Hi thanks for advice. My memory is PC3200 1Gig.
My CPU is a thougherbred 2400xp. would this work as a 2700xp? i have a massive fan on cpu and about 2 or 3 case fans.

I've had three 2100 T'breds and all did 2700 with stock volts, so there is every chance yours will if it is unlocked.

Your RAM and cooler look good.

Sorry 1 more question where on mainboard do i change the settings? iam trying to find it in my book and big open up map (know what i mean)

Sorry m8, Just had a look at the manual for this mobo and you can't set the fsb to 166 by dipswitch - it autodetects 133 or 166 - so my ideas won't work :( as it will always set fsb at 133 with a max of 165 in the BIOS - but you need 166 to reset the AGP back to 66.

So the only way to OC without increasing the AGP is to up the multiplier to x16 or so - see p12 of manual. Again this will only work with an unlocked cpu.
