If I bump up the multiplier and gain overclocking simply by that (without tweaking anything else) does that still constitute an overclock? (noticeable gains in speed?)

Also is this way less dangerous to doing damage to a cpu?

thanks

You have a cracking CPU mate. Probably best if you read a general overclocking guide first. Overclocking can be dangerious espically if you board starts overvolting. In general, you want to set most of your voltages to safe values and overclock in small amounts, while each time testing stability. I would advise downloading the intel burn test - 30mins of that will confirm stability.

Once you have read up, come back with any questions. Hopefully PaullyD will see this has from memory he has his q9650 @ 4.4ghz prime stable.

Also, can you please advise your full specs including your cooling situation?

I dont have any water cooling or anything, but I picked up a Tuniq tower which is a bit of beast for air I think...I will have a little tinker around and see how I fair, cheers

I have an unlocked multiplier on my cpu (phenom II X2 550 BE) and I found I could get much bigger increases using the multiplier alone than I could using the clock speed alone.

I recommend getting it to the highest stable multiplier and then increase the clock speed one by one to see how far it will go.

I am by no means an expert though, but it seems to have mostly worked for me (managed a 0.7ghz overclock so far). But anyone who is shaking their heads at this please let me know as well, I am mostly just playing around with settings to see what will happen. :D

Remember to stress test and keep an eye on temps.

Your cpu has a max multiplier of 9 by the looks of things, you should be able lower the multiplier but not raise any higher than 9.

Ah. Looks like you wont be able to do what I said then. My cpu is on a multi of 19...

I think the beginners guide describes what you should be doing.

What is the default multi on that cpu? Is 9 the default? If he can raise it at all I guess he should though. Not sure.
