Best stable clock I can get is 2.79 .(215x13)
Volts do not seem to make a lot , if any , difference - e.g. runs stable at 2.79 with 1.325 v. but would not overclock stable above 2.79 even with 1.375v.
Checked not Ram or Hypertransport by relaxing both (ram does not like above 250mhz).
Temps are fine - on air with Noctua cooler
Am running Asus A8N32-SLI with 2x1gb Crucial Ballis.ram . CPU code/stepping(?) is LCB9E
Would like to get to 3ghz but attempts(if mem serves correct 250x12 and/or 240x12.5) failed - would not boot into bios , never mind windows.
Any advise much appreciated - partic. on ? of volts!! ( am very wary of frying tonight scenario!) have not increased volts for anything but the cpu should I and if so what ?
Or should I simply be happy with what I've got !

Find out if your board is topping out or CPU. Put CPU to lowest multi and go to your current FSB (HTT) and then incriment it. If the overclock fails, its the board, if it's fine, your CPU is hitting its wall.

Hi

Contra to public opinion, not all Opterons will overclock to heady heights. I have a 180 that struggles to make 2.6 regardless of increasing the voltage to the CPU. Though as commented above, it could be your board that's the restricting factor. Tried mine in two different boards with the same result (IE. won't go above 2.6).

my LCB9E needs 1.55v for 3000, and has problems running 2*1gig above about 240mhz fsb, try dropping your ram and setting cpu to ~1.5v and fsb to ~230 (13x multi), see how it goes.

another issue, most motherboards boot the cpu at stock v-core/multiplier then set as requested AFTER the initial booting phase, so you might find you can wind up the fsb for a higher clock once in windows. the v-core i can get arround with my mobo because it has a V-core +X facility.

Many thanks for replies/advise .

Certainly given me a few ideas and over next few days will try 'em.

? 1.55v - I thought max for this CPU was 1.4v ?

In answer to queries:-
1.Noctua with standard fan.- case is Stacker(1st Edit) with 2x120mm +internal long(cools board) fan (sorry can't remember its name) intake and 1x120mm rear+80mmceiling exhaust.
2. 47C max under load - Prime

Do believe it is the CPU that is maxing out rather than board - but will check.

Would mention that it will boot into windows @2.8/2.85 BUT fails under prime - always the same core

Exactly the same as mine does. Did some looking about on other forums and most 185's are the same and don't clock well at all.

I can't get my 185 stable above 2.79 on air and I have 4gig of Corsair PCT3200 on a DFI Lanparty Expert. The 185 doesn't like the higher volts so I wouldn't bother.

Tried everything but it seems to be the CPU rather than the board. Looks like we are stuck with it ! :(

2.75 is actually a pretty good clock - when they first came along, 3.0 Ghz was only for the elite few, now that the newer steppings are all but guaranteeing it people forget that it wasn't always so. You could always flog it and try to pick up a 'known clocker' but you'll only gain a couple of hundred Hz so not really worth the faf - on balance, on air, that's a perfectly respectable clock.

Well I have been happy running mine at 2.95 for the last few months. If I had water cooling I would get more out of it. Also If I removed the IHS, temps would drop more.

Im hust 49mhz of 3Ghz.

Clairvoyant ; At what settings fsb/muti/hypert/ram? I assume 1.5v?

What cooling do you have? - Temps under load?

Still concerned that 1.5v may be

Check out my new Opty, I've yet to do an 8 hour run but it looks promising so far, temps are crap though, I think it's a bad mount but I'm getting a better HSF soon anyway so I'll leave it for now.

FSB 227 x 13 = 2951
HTT = 1135
RAM DDR 550 @ 233 (CPU/12) = 536 3,4,4,8 1T 2.75v
Currently a Titan Amanda (TEC cooler) was a Thermaltake Big Typhoon Temps 59c/60c under Othos. Under gaming mid 50`s.

Water/Removing the IHS would get the temps down more. I have had no BSOD`s or Crashes from this clock.

If I wa not upgrading to a Quad and 4 gig, I would remove the IHS. As it dropped the temps on my Opty 170 when I had that.

WOW what cooler are you using. They are good temps.

I may try reseating mine, as I know my is sitting bad, poor instalation by myself.

I have also dropped the HTT to x4 and the vcore but I get vdroop on this board.

I'm using an AF64 Pro and I've got a Scythe Ninja.B on the way. I do hope that the temps are just down to a bad mount, currently idling @ 38/32 when my Opty 170 used to idle at 23/28 :(

yeah my opty 180 isnt the best clocker either. will do 2.6 at 1.375ish

it will however retain stock 2.4ghz at 1.25v which i like a hell of a lot as it wont hit over 65c, think it hovers around 55c while gaming, on very very low fan settings in a small form factor pc (sn25p). if my x800xt didnt rev up so much i could have almost silent gaming.... 3870 when i have the cash i think :P

the most it does stable is around 2.7ghz ish at 1.45/1.5 (sorry cant remember exactly) at 2.8 it wont pass orthus at 1.55v

im not really that disapointed as i needed a duel core upgrade from my 3000+ at 2.7ghz. an overclock would have just been a bonus really. i do have to wonder just how amd go about picking their bins though with lower end models overclocking much better. maybe they do it on purpose as they know they are more likely to get overclocked.. keeps the enfusiasts happy and gets them some good press i guess.

agedidiot i have an opty 180 lcb9e can't remember what week though on same motherboard as you . that does 3 ghz on stock volts prime stable . i put a thread up a few months ago , but the same as you once it had hit its peak raising volts had no appreciable effect exept on temps . i could not get another 100mhz no matter what volts or alterations i did seems this stepping doesn't like volts i'm afraid:)

Ideal temps dont matter really, mine are mid to hig 30`s.

I think I may try a reseat.

Yeah but load temps are higher than before too, I know the CPU is clocked 200MHz higher than my old one so this will generate a bit more heat but my 170 only reached 44/51c @ 1.35V whilst running small FFTs, that's 10c less on each core than I'm getting now!

As above, lets just hope it's a contact issue that the new cooler and a reseat will sort out. One thing I noticed that does seem strange is that core 0# is hotter than core #1 when idle but the reverse is true when under load. Surely if core 1# is cooler to start with, it would suggest that it has better contact with the IHS and so should get get rid of heat more quickly?

@ Slap ed & agedidiot: Do you remember what steppings you had? Mine is LCB9E 0704XPMW
