Overclocking-why and do I need it?

You dont need it, but its nice to have it, a few years ago i was quite happy to run a system at stock, tbh i was scared of overclocking. Took my first baby steps with a graphics card oc, soon got the bug, cpu overclocking followed pretty quickly after that, im certainly no expert at it but ive had some great results on the 4 intel cpu's ive owned.

The other way of looking at is that you do not need to overclock it today. An i7 CPU and a 5870 GPU will probably be fast enough for anything you need today.

At some point, the technology will move on and it will become a little slow at some tasks. At that point, you can always overclock it to gain a free speed boost rather than buying new hardware.

On the other hand, you are asking the question of "Should I overclock" on an overclocking forum so I guess you are not going to get many people saying "no" :)

You don't need it.

I dont need a Range Rover either but I want one:cool:

all good sound advice as usual on here, thanks fellas, well it looks like I'll be joining the overclocked fast as #### PC brigade.........and why not.....your a long time dead:rolleyes:

on that happy note I'll get my plastic out and do some damage:eek:

Some really useful info there. I don't think you need to overclock but its to get the very most of your hardware. I did my very first overclock a few months ago not because I needed the extra power but to see if I could. Intel core i7 920 3.6ghz at stock voltage. Didn't push it any further as I didn't need to, but maybe when I need the power ill push to 4.
