I have a bank account with santander, this morning i got an email to say that i have charges being applied to my account that i need to log in to see them. i went and checked and my balance is -£12, i knew this however my account has or had no overdraft charges. however santander changed my account type last month without emailing, phoning or sending me a letter to one that now has overdraft charges and also expects me to put £1000 a month in. and to top it off is charging me £100 for the overdraft as well.

What you reckon my chances are of getting that overdraft charge waved? also are they able to changed my account type without my consent or knowledge?

Banks often send out letters stating changes to your account are happening. Did they send you anything recently?

a couple of years ago I got some Santander charges and was told once a year (or maybe once ever, i don't recall0 they will withdraw them for you. no idea if this is still the case but they did let me off them.

Give them a call and argue your case, especially as they haven't informed you of your account changes.

I emailed then complaining about the charges and the said something along the lines of "out of courtesy we will not process the charge on this occasion" - however this one was a one off.

I recently got one from Barclays about how they are changing overdrafts.

I have a low interest £250 overdraft that I sometimes dip in to for a few days at the end of the month, and this usually equates less than a £1, something I am happy to pay for the buffer.

Now they are waving some of the unpaid fees (which I never get hit with) but introducing standing charges per day that you are in your overdraft, at 75p a day for my limit.

So I will now be paying between 50-375% more for a 'benefit' that doesn't apply to me.

Thanks Baclays, for helping me get my arse in to get and move to First Direct :D
I will miss the free Kaspersky though!

they sent me out a new card as my last one expired, i read the letter there is nothing about an account change. the only thing i have is a pdf in my edocuments section of my account saying my account has changed. usually when i get an edocument they email, however they didnt this time.

checked my email the change occured on the 20/02 and i wasnt notified

hmm.. interesting, gonna go in and put money in and ask the woman at the desk if i can get the charges waved. If she can't do it i'll give customer service a ring.

I've had like 5 charges waved from santander (all through their fault mind you) you can't ask in branch, they tell you to phone.
Changed bank shortly after

Strange, even then it is different form others, which state if you have a balance of £1000 you will receive interest and must fund the account with £500 to receive cash back and have 2 direct debits setup upon the account.
