Overheating Issue

My system appears to be overheating and I can't figure out why. Everything is cleaned and clear of dust.

When turned on from cold, Core Temp is showing 90-95, going quickly up to 98 degrees after about 10 minutes low use (i.e. checking e-mails).

Any ideas or help?

I had my system from Overclockers back in October 2011, so not very old:

Coolermaster CM690-II Advanced Case - Black

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz Quad Core Processor

I haven't checked the CPU actually. It had a watercooled system attached to it, which I am not too familiar with. Will investigate further. Its one of those internal watercooled systems, self maintained.
 
Had a look at the water cooler and radiator is clear of dust, still running hot. It is attached directly to cpu with thermal paste. It isnt dusty or dirty under there either. Any other ideas?

As it's an asus motherboard I did have an experience recently where core temp / Hwmonitor were all showing incorrect incredibly high temperatures which did not match what temperatures were show in the bios. I would possibly recommend ASUS AI Suite II software, this was the only way I was able to get the actual temperature from the board. Are you able to touch the cpu block while it is on; is it actually getting hot. If it is 90 degrees you wouldn't be able to touch it for long.

Just had a look. I can perhaps touch block of the watercooler which is on CPU if thats what u mean? Saying that I can check BIOS temp to see how that compares. What should be the max running temp then of CPU?

Cheers for the advice guys. Will need to get some paste and need to test the temperature. Currently on night shifts for the next four so may need to wait until I finish them now :(

I did go into BIOS which starting temperature was around 55 but every 1-2 seconds started increasing by 1 degree. Didn't see how high it went as I had to turn off machine

Will investigate further and see.

Sounds like poor CPU to waterblock heat transfer or coolant is not circulating like it's supposed to.

Is the waterblock on CPU warmer to the touch than one of the hoses? (the hose carrying the coolant from pump to radiator) The hottest point in system should be the hose carrying coolant from CPU to radiator.

Reason I ask is because if pump motor is running you will feel / hear it but the pump impeller is not moving than no water is moving through the loop.. so no heat will move away from waterblock/cpu.

Will test on days off and update. Thanks :)

Hi just tested this. The machine started at 39 degree the went 89 degrees idle in BIOS! Yes the block seems warmer than hoses. Does this mean the cooling block is not doing what it should be? After turning off machine, radiator and hoses are cool to the touch but block is still warm.
 
My guess is coolant is not circulating.

May sound like a silly question but what next then? If you can supply a link on what I need to get that would be good :p

Also, just out of interest, what is stopping the CPU birning out completely?
 
As you have a CLC you probably need a new cooling system. I have no idea if your system is still under warranty but if it is try that route.

CPU's self regulate and throttle and/or shutdown automatically to try and keep from burning out.

Quick question...will the h80i just fit exactly the same place as my current cooler?
 
I don't use CLC because of known issues with their pumps. Some like H series have had several models with a history of problems. I assume you paid £55 your OcUK H²Flo Extreme a couple years ago.

My suggestion is get a nice air cooler. You have 177mm cpu clearance in your CM 690 II (from CM's website). Plenty of room for any cooler I can think of. I don't know how tall your Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB RAM is. If it stands less than 40mm above motherboard most coolers will fit over it. Silver Arrow SB-E has least clearance with 39mm. Top air coolers are between £54-70.00 and will cool as good as what you had.

Air coolers have virtually no problems. Occasionally a fan dies but is easily replaced. Air coolers are cheaper, quieter, usually cooler better and more dependable. I'm still using a Thermalright Ultra-120A from 2006... I did replace the fan. ;)

If you decide to go air I can make more specific suggestions.

I can't remember how much I paid but the H80i will cost around £70-£80. What air cooler could you suggest then, and how would I fit this over my original setup. I.e. radiator and fan, etc. ?
 
Well Alpenfohn K2, Phanteks PH-TC14PE, Noctua NH-D14 and maybe Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E (3 models) are arguably the best. Not sure all will fit over your RAM. Could yo measure how high it stand above your motherboard? All are between $54-70.

What were your temps before you had problems with your system?

I will have to measure on days off as I am working again tonight. I have been told that a 775 heat sink and fan should be sufficient? Whats your advice on this as I haven't a clue what that is and how it performs?
 
Your 2500 is a 1155 so different spacing to 775. Your case will fit 177mm over CPU and CPU is 8mm above mobo so 185mm. If your RAM is about 40mm above mobo you can fit a 140mm fan over RAM. If that's true you can use any cooler you want. I prefer big cooler because they can take more heat away from CPU with less fan speed.. so you get a quieter system.. assuming your GPU is quiet. And I like quiet systems. If you don't need as much cooling as your old CLC was capable of than you can use a lower cost cooler. These are thinsg I need to know in order to give you good advice.
