Overheating problem with Q6700

First of allIm having overheating problems with my cpu, an Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66GHz (Q6700) and i dont know wether its because of my heatsink (an Akasa 961) or if thats the normal temperature it should have. The temperatures of my CPU at idle are around 55 to 58 C on all cores. I use Core Temp and many other teamperature reading softwares to read the temp and they all give the same readings.

Here are some of my system specs:
Motherboard: Intel DP35DPM
Power supply: Akasa P100FG (1000 w)
Ram: 2Gb DDR2
The comp case has 3 fans so ventilation isn't a problem.
Don't know if that helps at all.

I have tried re-mounting the heatsink to made sure its on properly. I also added my own thermal paste (Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound), just a rice grain amount, which I think is the recommended amount. Maybe I just need a better CPU cooler? If so then which one would you guys recommend?

Any advice would be helpful ;) .

Hi , Welcome to the forum.

That does seem un usually high. I was going to recommend you replace the heat sink with some new thermal grease , but you have already tried this.

When did this sudden over heating start to happen. ? Or how long has it been happening. ?

I am leaning towards a better cooler to be honest. The quads normally require larger heatsinks to cool them efficiently , but the one your using is similar to the Intel stock if not better , so should be cooling better than that more so as your at stock 2.66ghz.

Q6700s are toasty little buggers, I had one and even on water I couldn't clock it past about 3.3ghz because of the heat.

From looking at those pics, the cooler sucks air into the matrix and out of the sides at the base, so even with a good case push/pull fan setup, this will disrupt the flow and disrupt cooling. (imo)

Ill go with that, it must be the heatsink, otherwise i'm totally lost. Thank you for your help :)

So you know that pic does not do the heat sink justice. Its huge. Just make sure you have room to fit one prior to order. Just so you know. :D

You will need to grab two decent fans to mount on that for push pull configuration. THESE are popular at the moment.

Good luck
