My housemate is in a pickle here, his old machine died, so recently built a new machine.

fresh install of windows xpsp2, put in old hard drive, tries to get into his documents folder and... "Access is denied"

now its pretty impossible to get his old box / windows install up and running to reset the permissions, but is there a way to recover these files that obv have permissions set on them?

You can, off the top of my head to need to take ownership of them. I think you go into security | advanced | ownership

You may need to turn simple file sharing off first.

Yup, something like that. Type access is denied into help and support and I think you can find it in there.

EDIT: Article ID 810881 (that's probably KB810881) :).
