overtime just to cover living costs

I do think it's cheeky that rent goes up with the value of the house. Surely the landlords mortgage is fixed:confused:.

It is but nothing stopping landlords asking for more.

I should increase the rent on my property by at least £50 a month but I'm not that type of person to be so greedy. I actually might drop it in 2 years if the tenant is still there because they are good.

Sorry I should rephrase, my parents didn't do it when they had let properties. Just think it's a bit disgusting tbh.

Yep but interest goes up and also its a market place like any other so if you don't rent it for X price someone else will

If your house has gone up by 50% then it likely rents have also significantly increased (£450 would be a room in a house share here) so not only do they need a larger deposit but they'll have higher outgoings. Wages up until last year haven't really increased in the last decade.

Yes but when we were buying our house 25% deposit just to get a house was quite normal. I haven't really looked into it but I guess 5-10% would be quite common at the moment?

10-15k is surely enough to get yourself on the ladder these days. Obviously you are not going to be getting anything down south but beggars cannot be choosers. If a couple can get a combined salary of 3k take home a month (which should be easy) and with 2k outgoings (which should be easy) you will save 1k a month between you. In 18 months you have a deposit for a house. Yes you will be driving around in an old banger and yes you will have a Nokia 3310 but you will have your own house at the end of it.

So all I would need to do is quit my job, move half way up the country away from friends and family, shack up with some northern bird, forego any luxuries and I too could (half) own a 2 bed flat in Slough.

What if we all did that and there was nobody left to work in the South?

That's your choice unfortunately. I wasn't saying it was for everyone. I was just saying it was a possibility. No one has entitlement to live somewhere otherwise I would be demanding a place in Monaco.

The issue with this logic is that

A) It just encourages house prices to keep going up. As long as people will pay the price they will keep going up.
B) In that 18 months the price of a house will probably have gone up £15k making your deposit even less.
C) The country needs people all over doing different jobs. We can't send all the poorer people up north to live and work. Its also mean to make people live North of the wall.
D) Its not addressing the core issue. Houses shouldn't be this expensive. There should be controls over rent, more houses should be built and policies that increase the price of houses should be massively discouraged.

The stamp duty holiday was mind blowingly ******* stupid and I struggle to believe that people didn't tell them it was at the time. Be understand so little about money that they think house prices going up is a good thing. Almost nobody benefits from house prices going up apart from rich landlords with multiple properties. The rest of us, homeowners included are completely screwed by the system.

Obviously it makes sense to distribute jobs all over the country but the government making HS2 (Just one of the many examples) just wants to focus everything on London.

Yeah, the country needs to perhaps realise that London isn't the centre of the universe. Might solve a lot of issues if people didn't think the rest of the country was like London and applied London centric thinking to it as well.

I think this goes towards answering your question

I knew there were a lot of people not very good at maths (I know plenty!) but that's shocking. If they're struggling with basic numeracy then throw on top of that financial planning, understanding credit %'s, APR and they really just don't have a clue so they stick their head in the sand about it all.

That's a shocking statistic, so only 20% of adults have achieved a grade C or above - i almost actually don't believe it.

I do wonder if that's skewed heavily though, i.e. is it a higher percentage amongst the younger generation of adults (Millennials / Gen Z)

I like how Slough is seen as being in the North

I agree with the sentiment though, expecting people to move half way across the country to be able to afford a roof over their heads isn't a great solution and only causes more social care problems with families split up.

Yeah doesn't matter how much you've paid in over the decades, if you ever need a bit of help you get treated like scum.
Some people here even seem to agree with that.

Yeah I wouldn't even say it's that much of a socialist view seeing as you'd have had to have worked for it in the first place.

after nipping to the fuel station and iceland it reminded me of this thread, £1.70L and £60 in iceland which really didnt get much food. cant wait for april..... i understand if your a high earner you can suck it up.

rent up .... check ( although only a tiny bit )
NI up shortly..... check
fuel up again.... check
food prices up again... check
gas / electric shooting up ..... check
council tax going up.... check
water bill up.... check

were i live there is thousands of jobs within this area and surrounding areas, yet thousands still on the dole
