Overuse of the word like.....

What does it mean in context? I can't rage against it properly if I don't know what it means...

As far as I know it just means "I swear" but gangster kids had to add something to it to make it sound harder.

Gangster 1: You dizzy blud?
Gangster 2: I swear down I popped a cap in that guys ass!

:p

Personally I find it strange anyone would care how someone speaks unless they couldn't understand it.

I take great pride in how I convey information and enjoy implementing the English language to the best of my ability. The skill of doing such can be vital within the realms of university, public speaking and business situations.

A well spoken sentence can instill confidence, reassure, comfort and compliment your particular focus of the moment; where as a stumbling, uncertain and/or unpassionate phrasing could lose a lot. :)

Or to put it in more simple terms, it makes people sound like unschooled illiterate retards.

This is weird, I was thinking about posting this very subject on another forum in the "what grinds your gears" thread.

Yes, I understand this, but I am asking why should you be annoyed by a person's simplicity? Should you not take instant pride upon realising you are superior to the mumbling moron you're speaking to?

Everyone gets annoyed by something, hardly any of your concern.

In terms of a reason it would annoy them, I would wager it's the same reason I think anyone who likes twilight should be sectioned, which is because it's an abomination of a medium I enjoy and holds no cultural, intellectual or artistic significance .

I fully understand. It drives me absolutely round the bend.

My sister has started it, and is now past the stage of one per sentence to what seems like 1 per syllable

Also "know what I mean?" and "yeah?", eg. "I went down to the shop, yeah(?), and, like, there was this big sign for like 15% off, yeah?"

*GRINDS TEETH*

This. Absolutely 100% this. Anybody who does the yeah thing deserves to be sentenced to twenty years hard labour, with no parole.

so I was like walking like past this shop. Then all of a sudden I was like thinking to myself what the hell am I doing here like? nah I'm joking I get what you mean :P
