Overvolting...

Guys,

I was just wondering what the long term effects of overvolting your CPU are, besides the temp increases...

The default voltage value for my E6600 is 1.325v I think. Whilst overclocking, how detrimental will it be to overclock to 1.4v or even 1.5v?

1.4 or 1.5v will be fine as long as the temps are ok keep it at about 60 deg load you should be ok

I had mine yesterday at 1.55v in bios 1.48 in cpu-z trying to get 3.6ghz on air temps fine but couldnt get it stable orthos failed within a couple of seconds didnt want to go above 1.55v although temps where ok maybe i should have given it a try. my load temps under orthos rarely go above 60deg

Perhaps - long term will you have the same CPU? It can cause electron migration apparently.

Overvolting generates much more heat and increases the power consumption a fair bit.

Depends how long you want to use it. If you're going to be upgrading in the next 3 odd years then a small voltage increase ~0.1-0.2v should be fine. Make sure your temperatures are ok and there shouldn't be a problem.

Depends on he cpu and how it was made..

ask arround about "sudden northwood death syndrome" back when the 1.6A's were out, and doing upto 3.2 ghz with high volts. they just dropped dead from it.

from the same time period i have an old T-bred B 2100+ that was used for 3.5 years @ 2450mhz @ 2.1V it still runs fine at 2.1V, but wont post below 1.75V now at any frequency O.o' historically AMD's have been very resiliant to elevated voltages (K6/2 @ 3.2v, thunderbirds @ 2.4v+ etc) - tho this might be down to less fear of toasting a cheap cpu. i dunno how later intels have behaved with volts. but 1.55 sounds sensible.

Yea SNDS was realllly bad, never seen so much cpus drop dead like that, am a victim as well. Luckily haven't heard of much c2d deaths due to overvolting and only seen 2 myself physically and those were reaalllly overvolted (1.8v+) 1.55v might be a bit too much especially on air, people usually don't go beyond 1.5v on air with C2D and personally i don't go over 1.45v -ish.

with 1.55v my idle temps where still only just over 40deg. idle and 60deg under orthos. oh and thats set in bios.

1.52v in vcore 1 speedfan???
1.48v in cpu-z

now backed down to 1.44v in cpu-z @3.4ghz not too bothered about the chip only lasting a couple of years as penryn looks gooood

at the end of the day, if you can find someone using a 5 year old oc to the hilt pc that still does everything they want just fine, ill show you someone who wont see any change downclocking (100% overclocks excluded) xD
