i don't understand why angry people feel the need to hit stuff to calm themselves down. I don't really know what i'd do since i'm quite a docile person and whenever I do get angry about something, i usually just supress it in. But then again I used to see a Psychiatrist twice a week.

It's a way to release your anger without hitting the person making you angry... obviously a punch bag would be ideal though to avoid what happened to the OP ;)

several reasons for me, 2 main ones are that pain makes the anger go away and i would rather hurt myself than someone else. Although i usually just get bruised knuckles, never have i used enough force to break a bone. Plus that last time i did this was about 8 years ago.

I need to vent my anger, if i keep it in i can feel myself stressing about it and it eats me alive. Once ive let it out im done with it, im calm again and can deal with the problem.

what the hell sorta crap can you face which would make you want to punch someone apart from initial physical contact to begin with?

I really cannot think what i'd face that would make me want to punch someone, last time I took crap like that this ******* punched three times in the face because he had finished school and missed bullying me and even then, i didn't punch him back, I just laughed at him.

When i think about it though, next time i'll probably not be so generous in my reactions

Exactly, you don't want to punch them so instead you hit something else to release your anger. Some people, like you don't get angry easily... I used to although nowhere near as much now.

Punching things is our method of anger management. It's probably hard to understand if you've not got a temper like some of us - but the uncontrollable urge to let out you steam/anger is unbearable.

It sounds worse than it is for me, I haven't hit anything in ages - but i used to put a crack in our wooden doors weekly when I was a kid.

It seems odd to those who don't let their temper get out of control, and rightly so to be honest.

I know all too well how silly it is, especially as I only ever lose my rag with really silly and trivial matters like losing my keys or my Sky remote deciding it's not going to work for a bit. Having a bit of a paddy and giving something a good clout usually released the anger in seconds, as immature as it sounds.

Funnily enough I have pretty much endless patience when it comes to people and more pressing matters, so I just keep a good supply of cushions handy at all times ;)

ive done this before.. i broke my knuckle and pinky twice in the space of a few months ....

its hurts

if you had asked me before i you did it i would have told you not to both ;)

When I was 8 I was running as fast as I can but not looking where I was going, what are the chances that a kid was doint the same in the other direction?

Cue egg sized lump on forhead and losing vision every now and then for 40 minutes.

I was sweeping the path at the back of the garage and bent down. When I stood up I really cracked my head off the corner of an open window.
I then punched the glass in a fit of rage and cut my hand, wrist and arm quite badly. :o
Ah well, good job i don't drink anymore :D

Hummm.. I understand the release for anger but you also have to look at it from the other persons point of view. What about your partner? Do you not think that every single time you punch a wall or break something that she is thinking "What if next time he hits me?" Or "What if he actually takes it out on me next time?" You can say that you would never hurt anyone else but things can get out of control very easy. I think what you have to ask yourself is why do you get so angry? Why do you feel the need for a violent physical release? And above all Why does hurting yourself make the pain go away?

She is the only person that can annoy me enough to make me do this, i even ask her to stop when i know im about to pop but she will carry on.

Im not looking to hurt anyone but myself, my dad hits women, in fact ive broken his nose for it. She knows i hate that and that no matter how angry i get ive enough self control to take it out on myself.

Keeping stuff locked away inside has been proven to have negative effects on your body, whats worse, letting it out or keeping it in? Has some idiot never been rude to you or cut you up on the road? I just use a few hand signals or a few choice words, it calms me down and i dont spend the next 2 days thinking "i wish id done this....!"

You get angry, pain over rides the anger and takes your mind away from it.

As for why i get angry, its only my missus that makes me like that, perhaps its becausse she is the only person whos opinion i really care about. Other people annoy but i can keep calm, like the time some chav kicked the side of the g/fs golf at some traffic lights. I could have kicked three shades out of him and he knew it as he was telling me to "come on then!" while backing up.

Do you know what happened? He ended up apologising to everyone in the car and shaking their hands because i kept my calm and spoke to him.

I find jumping on my mountain bike and going for a good hard ride is the best way to chill me out after ive gotten annoyed, we all have different ways of dealing with it

When I was younger (9-10), I was showing of in front of a girl on my BMX.

And I went over the handle bars and somehow managed to split my bits open.

Couldn't walk for a week.

I think ever guy that reads that will feel your pain, their face will go "ooooo" and their happysack will lift a little :p

A mate of mine did this, he hit the side of a shelf with his knuckles.

He shattered his wrist, and had to have two pins put into his hand. Was 6 months of pain then he had to have them removed. The mount of suffering he went through with that injury was quite amusing. :p

When I was younger I was trying to make a bow and arrow (after being to archery). I ended up slicing through my hand and an underlying artery with my Swiss Army knife that I had only recently received for my birthday. Blood really does splurt outwards like a fountain when an artery is cut. I seem to remember my dad was more concerned with the blood on the walls then with getting me to hospital :)

Not so long ago I slipped arse over heels on a wet kitchen floor and broke a bone in my hand. My mum who is a nurse didn't think I was in enough paion for it to be a broken bone "you would know about it if you had broken your hand". Two days later I eventually went for an x-ray and it was indeed broken. Subsequently, I do not believe the professional competency of so called medical professionals.

Funnily enough, since I've moved out of home I have not suffered any serious injuries at all..

I did something similar playing football. I was always a firm beleiver in the harder you go in for a tackly, the better off you'd be (perhaps at the expense of the person you're tackling).

That was until I came across this short stocky bloke. I swung for the ball in a tackle and hit his shin. I tried playing on but when I kicked the ball I was in so much pain I had to stop.

I thought I'd probably sprained it, but a few days later I was in so much pain I went to hospital. Turned out I'd shattered the joint of my big toe, and shards of bone were what was hurting so much.

I never understood why people feel the need to punch a wall. Of COURSE its going to hurt, when have you ever punched a wall and thought "oooh, that feels sooooo good!" ?

Bet he won't be doing that again! :p

Cracked my head open as a kid when I thought it would be a good idea to try to surf down a set of stone steps with a bread crate.

Recent years I've managed to stick a screwdriver in my left hand, was at my aunts helping setup a pump for their pond, as usual, things wasn't going as planned, the braces for the piping were too big, but I was determined to make them fit. Everything was soaking wet, including myself so as I was tightening the brace, the screwdriver slipped and plunged into my left hand.
Don't mind saying it stung abit :p

My cousin was the only 1 with me at the time and once he saw my bloody hand he did a runner on me
