Hi folks :)

Still doing some fine tuning on my setup, but I'm getting stuck with GB's LLC options on the UD7, I presume the settings are the same/similar on the whole X79 range (UD3/5/7/G1).

All the videos, guides I see show the LLC adjust showing as a percentage, from 0% to 100%. However when I adjust my LLC settings all I get is "Auto, Standard, Normal, Medium, High, Turbo & Extreme" none of which do anything but make vdrop even worse than it already is, I've already tried 3 bios revisions, F11K, F10 & F9, all the same.

Am I missing something obvious? It does show a percentage, but it never changes, looks something like:

[vCore Load Line Calibration] - - [+60%] - - [Auto]- The latter box being the only one that will adjust.

All other LLC settings adjust as they should, with a percentage just not the vcore setting :confused:
 
Nope, dvid is disabled running a straight core voltage, what I'm asking is what other giga boards in the range show under llc, the videos and pictures I see for the ud7 show an adjustable percentage llc, I have no such options, as a result my vcore is dropping by over 0.040v :(
 
Damn, what bios version is that on?

Going to try F7 & F8 tonight I think.

I'll also directly measure the vcore from the motherboard with a multimeter, check it's not a reporting error.

none... the board that blew was because the bios allowed the user to set extreme voltages which then blew the board - it was operator error

the newer bioses are locked to much lower voltages to prevent this

I have a UD3 and LLC settings do nothing to help - I just account for the drop by setting slightly higher than desired... the drop is very predictable and occurs solidly everytime the CPU gets loaded so it doesn't bother me too much

the ONE case of VRMs setting on fire was because the USER WAS AN UTTER IDIOT who went in to the bios and put all the voltages on full

Thats good to know, I must admit I was guilty of only reading the headlines along the lines of "X79-UD7 bursts into flame on bios Fxx" without digging any further into it, so thanks for easing my mind on that front.

I won't be doing anything overly drastic with regards to voltages, I don't have the memory to mess around with the IMC voltage or the smarts to fiddle with the PLL. Plus the VRM's are going under water soon.

Going to drop it down to F2 (stock bios) and update and see at what point the LLC becomes a crippled nonsense option.
 
Ok so I can't drop from a retail bios down versions, I think I can however drop from a beta version down, so going to have to go F9>F11M>F2

Edit: Maybe not, currently impossible for me to drop any lower than F9.

Quite a let down to have such bad vdroop on a high end motherboard, guess I'll just have to try navigate around it, the drop is floating between 0.038 - 0.040v regardless of LLC setting so I'll just have to calculate from that.

Intel spec is 60% or 0.60 ohms I think, the least droop I've managed at all is setting llc to extreme 1.45v giving load voltage of 1.424v.

Having bios issues now too cmos checksum keeps failing. Tempted to cut my losses and get a RIVE tbh.

Th p8z68 I had suffered from no droop at all, 1.38v gave me 1.38v
 
Just been reading that giga released a statement saying that the x79 range is aimed at ease of overclocking rather then overclockability. What's the point? I didn't move to an enthusiast socket to be conservative.

RIVE later this year me thinks, especially if I can't get this board to clock using straps as is proving difficult atm.

I was on F11L but it was constantly failing my overclocks and giving me a CMOS Checksum Error, so I rolled back to F9, where at the moment at least it seems fine. Will give F11N a try tonight. A shame they don't attach change logs to these beta files as the UD7 F11 bios has had 4 or 5 beta bios's inside the last month.

I'm at a point where I can probably live with the board until IB-E is released, but at that point I will be swapping it out for some flavour of ROG.
 
UD7 is set to be replaced by an msi big bang xpower II this weekend, a lovely board but the droop let's it down massively. Seemingly the new UP x79 boards also have the same issue.

I fully understand Intel set a droop of around 0.06v by design, but when you have 5 levels of llc and not one of them improves things it's quite drastic. I find it ironic that the highest llc setting actually makes things worse!

Unfortunate as apart from this issue I really like the board but having to set an input of 1.56v to get 1.48v with dual eps connectors is pathetic imo.
