Could not find a post about the Oxfam prostitution farce, is it just me or is this once again a mountain out of a molehill?
So they paid some hookers for sex, those women do that for their living, they probably have to keep their family & parents/ grandparents on the money they earn or they would starve so why is it such a crime ? Front page news, major headlines on the TV

If it was taking advantage of homeless women or children for sex then it would be different but seemingly it's not.

Oxfam as a charity aims to eradicate poverty and that includes the need for people to resort to prostitution to make a living - though there are aspects there that are debatable as some might still chose to do it as a profession.

But how likely is eradicating worldwide poverty going to happen anytime soon, if ever ? in the meantime these women still have to work to provide for their families

Can't eescape this one.
All oxfam had to do was deal with it as soon as it came to light.

If I understand it correctly this is the issue.

They new about it, and didn't deal with it.

It still is counter to their goals.

I have to say largely I'm unconcerned about it but it could be argued that with the socio-economic conditions in Haiti those in that trade would be more likely to be there out of need than choice.

Personally I'm really not bothered if people use prostitutes even people working for charities, etc. but in some cases - as in some parts of the world where it is potentially exploitative as Dowie says below it is walking a fine line.

I dunno, if in a developed nation then meh, but in a "****hole" country like Haiti then it is potentially exploitative. (Unless people want to pretend Haiti isn't a ****hole).

Similarly it is/was exploitative for the (mostly) female charity workers/volunteers at the refugee camp in Calais to start shagging the migrants/refugees... they were generally all from ****hole countries whether they were fleeing war or just economic migrants looking for a better life.

Lastly, WTF were any of these people thinking. How desperate do you have to be to **** some prostitute in a third world country with the highest number of AIDS victims in the Cartibean.

It seems the issue is more than Ofxam lied (or just didn't say anything) to the Charity Watchdog rather than the employees getting prostitutes.

Poverty can never be eradicated.... Not in this capitalist world. Oxfam should just shut up shop.

I'd probably need to see how much we're talking and the what they looked like to give a fair judgement

I'm sure the people running oxfam are on a very nice wage, so they won't be shutting up shop any time soon, or eradicating poverty.

I believe it is heavily biased by the trade being morally unacceptable. Even when freedom of choice is not in question.

So there's the facts of actions and then there's the huge skewing of the story with the above because a charity sets itself up on a moral high ground.

This undermines them morally completely separate to the actual facts which will get processed in their own time.

It's not shocking news to hear that men are paying for prostitutes or that women are selling sex. You just don't want such negative labels stuck on you. Especially when your entire goal is begging people for money.

There is always the argument with charities that paying top wage for top talent ultimate makes the organisation run better and results in more effectively use of the money and resources they do have ultimately saving money

That said however it made me sad a couple of days ago when the Amazon Smile prompt thing popped up on the Amazon page as flicking through most of the eligible charities I know most of them only a tiny fraction of the money would actually be going towards the ostensibly ends of the charity :(

I find it poisonous to my image of a charity that people seek to get the label then run it as money farming scheme with a token effort towards the cause they claim to support.
