P2P Blocking App needed - Freeware If Poss.

I am in need of an app I can install in the daughters PC to block P2P traffic.

The wife and I have told her several times that enough is enough, she has had her time on P2P and it stops. I am buggered if I get a letter with a 2K fine or have the line disconnected as this is also used for business purposes.

So this needs nipping in the bud asap.

My router only has options to close certain port ranges but this is proving to be a ball ache as other legit apps she uses can also be blocked and I don't want to sit here all day forwarding ports. The other thing is a further 12 month contract with ISP and I need to have a VOIP phone and the new router i am getting has even less features for this kind of thing.

Does anyone know of any apps I can install on her pc that will work invisibly in the background and will block P2P programs i.e Utorrent, Bitlord....?

I dont want it to do anything else than that.
 
get a WRT54GL router, install Tomato firmware on it


that's a cable router, so you may need the AM200 adsl modem too
 
I have a Belkin F5D7633 at present which is soon to be changed for the new BT Hub.

While the price ratio for the WRT54GL to a 2K fine is pretty large, I would sooner stick to what I am currently setting up hardware wise.
 
Awkward solution but if you're on XP Pro, Vista Business or Vista Ultimate there is a group policy to block processes from running but it means getting all the names of the p2p programs she uses.

Or introduce her to newsgroups with SSL connections, much lower risk than general p2p.

Totally forgot Group Policy. :)

Well that can do for now I suppose. Newsgroups were discussed as an alternative and even as a subscription, she would still probably choose a 75Gb package and get me hung anyway. :rolleyes:
 
Just block the ports on your router if possible. Or block everything and only open what you need. You said you didn't want to do it but to be honest its free and doesn't take long at all.

Just take the PC away from her. If she needs to use it for school work, supervise her or take her to the library.

Or just give her an OS with her as a non-admin user, so she can't install the apps.
If she needs something installing she has to ask you.

Things like uTorrent can be run without installing
 
I'm very interested in this, as I have similar issues with my student house's internet being run through my account. I obviously can't monitor what they do exactly with the connection all the time lol..
 
You could put in a Software Restrictions policy to stop her running exe's from her documents or temp folder, then change her account to a standard account, not exactly fool-proof but would make the task that much harder.
