i'm running vista 64 and since i built my new pc about 4 weeks ago it's been rock solid. not a single hiccup.....in that time, i had ahci mode disabled in the bios (i'm not even that sure what it does really :o).

anyway, i removed my old samsung 250gb because i'm selling it. i just fitted a new WDC WD5000AAKS 500gb drive and at the same time i enabled the ahci option in the bios of my gigabyte p35-ds3l. i did a complete clean install of vista 64 HP and of course installed the latest chipset drivers once it was done. but in the last day windows has locked up twice. both times, my music keeps playing (i'm always listening to something) and the mouse has moved but i haven't been able to click anything. tried ctrl-alt-del to bring up task manager and that's when windows freezes. i've hard to do a hard reset both times. no bsod and nothing in event viewer.

now i'm thinking it's more likely to be ahci mode causing this problem rather than the new hard drive? any thoughts/experience on this? i've just disabled ahci in the bios (windows still boots ok) and will see how i get on over the next few hours/days but has anybody else had any problems like this (btw i only run a single hard drive and an ide optical drive - that is all). on both occasions, the hard drive wasn't under any load - just web browsing and playing music. i've been playing games, copying/backing up huge amounts of files previously with no problem??

sorry for the long rambling post. :o

edit:
disabled ahci and it just locked up again. i also set another bios option at the same time - "SATA Port0-1 Native Mode" this was previously set to disabled when i had no problems. i enabled it at the same time as ahci. time to disable it again to see if it cures my problem. :(

really hope it's not the drive. i bought it 2nd hand of the MM but it was brand new sealed in the bag still...... plus i've already got payment incoming for my old drive which i had no problems with. what a pain in the ***.

try another motherboard port, and try another cable

then try the WD testing tools, probably an ISO for them on the WD site

hate problems like that :/

bah. this has come back to bite me in the bum - i was running ok for a few days with no problems. i've tried different ports/cables and reset the bios settings to what i was using previously. the only thing different now is the drive - and my pc locked up again in exactly the same way. i was watching a youtube video and the sound kept on playing even though the screen had locked up.......(infact it carried on streaming, the video had only just started and played way past the amount that already had been downloaded)

i've also tried the drive diagnostics but that passed ok. am at a loss now. :(

i'm seriously considering sticking xp on for a few days to see how i get on. :o
