Hello guys and gals, tis my first post here so go easy :p

Am looking at upgrading my motherboard and Ram BUT keeping my old cpu for now (haven't got enough money for it all, only 17) I ran cpu-z and it says I got a P4 650, just looked on the compatibility list for a gigabyte p35 ds3p and it says it supports it from a certain bios revision...

Now, my only major problem is that I assume my processor won't work in there until it has the right bios, which leads me to ask, is there any way I can put on the latest bios onto it WITHOUT it damaging the CPU?

Anyahoot, link to the motherboard is here.. All 3 revisions of the board need Bios version 4 for my processor by the looks, so I've emailed overclockers asking what revision and bios type the one they're selling is.

The other point is ram, do I buy 2gb of the really fast Crucial Stuff on sale this week or 4gb of the OCZ? If I get some replies I'm looking at buying some stuff tonight!!

Final question,if its the OCZ stuff to go for,how much will Windows XP Media Centre 2005 Edition reconise?

Thanks in advance people!!!

Cheers Thorne!! In that case, what RAM do you think I should get, and how much do you you reckon I could overclock the CPU with the cooler I've got (Gigabyte (GH-PDU22-SC) G-Power Lite)

Welcome to the forums!

I should remove that link quickly or the mods will not be happy bunnies.
You're not allowed to even mention competitors, let alone link to them.

PK!

If you do order a P35-DS3P try to get a rev 1.1 or even better a rev 2, the 1.1 has a small coolers and the rev 2 has replaced the parallel/ serial ports with more USB ports.

The Rev 1 has a high crazy cooler heatsink that you may find hampers your fitting of your gigabyte G-Power cooler although I am not absolutly sure. I have a P35-DQ6 that has the same crazy cooler as the rev 1 DS3R and it can get in the way of things.

Best thing with memory is to check the Gigabyte approved memory list and choose something they list. I only say this as if you get any technical problems the support isnt very good on memory they dont list as I have just found out with a problem I had using non approved memory

Back again :)

I've got so far, I've set the ram +0.15v (cause aparently its 1.8 stadard and my OCZ runs 1.8-2v so that should be at 1.95v) but the PC is restarting before the XP loading screen with its blue bar can even get to the end!!! Could this be a motherboard/ram issue, or simply a conflict with something on my hard drive (thinking along the lines of audio drivers or something)

It ain't cpu heat, I've already had to fix that problem!! Also, the qflash utility does not allow me to flash from cd drive, it only detects a floppy drive. More worryingly, I don't actually have a floppy drive, but do have a 3.5" card reader...

Raise the MCH and FSB voltages a notch to strengthen the northbridge for 4 sticks.

Also give the memory atleast 2.0v, maybe even as much as 2.1v.

Have you got a USB memory stick? Q-Flash will read them fine.

Then in theory you should have no problems.

Can you boot into XP with just 2 sticks?

Btw what was your old motherboard?

You shouldn't really need to let it cool. Just unplug the power cord and touch a radiator to discharge any static.
