P35-DS3P,new ram and my old CPU

Another idea bites the dust, that didn't work either...
My old motherboard was a gigabyte ga-8i915pm, thats what it says on it anyway...

Well it was an Intel 915P chipset, but you should still be able to boot into XP. But I really would reinstall XP again anyway after a chipset change.

What speed is the memory running at?

Have you touched the FSB or memory settings?

If not, and your CPU is still running at the speed posted in the screenshot at the top of the post, then it's probably running at 600mhz (200mhz FSB and the x3.0 Memory Multiplier).

I would set the Memory Multiplier to x4.0 to set it to 800mhz.

Right, memory frequency is set to 800mhz and system memory multiplier is set to auto, with a list of options and one of them being 4.0+, is that it?

Leave it on Auto or set it to x4. Just so long as it says 800mhz.

I can't see that affecting XP, so after one more try to boot swap the two sticks for the other two sticks and try again.

To be honest I need to wipe my drives anyway, got all my work, photos and pictures backup up just incase, so will wipe them clean, start again and report back in the morning...

Thanks for all your help!!!!

Nae bother.

If XP refuses to install, download and run Memtest86+ to check your memory (it makes a bootable CD). Tho it's unlikely both sets would be faulty.

Morning all, bit of an update...

I put the other 2 sticks in and reformatted PC, installed XP fine, after about an hour of installing bits and bobs, the pc froze, a small bit of the music looped for about 2 seconds and the whole pc restarted. This was while attempting to install a program called 'ad aware' from my pc gamer disc. Thought nothing about it, but the pc got to my dekstop after restarting and then restarted AGAIN. Being near midnight I turned the PC off.

So could it still be ram related?? I'm gonna try running this memtest program and see what happens. Another bit to point out is that overclockers has the ram voltage as 1.9-2v but the official OCZ website has the ram at 1.9-2.1v, so is it worth upping it to that?? Have kep the MCH and FSB voltages at +0.1v as its got 4 sticks in, does this need increasing too?

EDIT: Well I've been on the PC for 2 hours now installing things, restarting and installing more stuff, and it has not restarted itself, so looks like all is well. It may of just been tired last night :)

Anyway, thanks for all the help again Cob, I am one happy overclockers customer....now to more important matters like Team Fortress 2 :p

Yeah I said earlier that 2.1v might be needed for 4 sticks. If it crashes again try bumping the FSB and MCH voltages another 0.05v.

Now I got it all working, I want it to go faster;)

Seeing as I know very little about how the multiplier and fsb work to give an overclock, whats the best and safest overclock you guys think I can acheive, I can see the options in bios but dont wanna start playing around with them too much...

The cooler keeps the CPU idling at about 35c, case temp is 32c and thats with the pc being on all day, downloading and installing stuff. Room temp is currently 22.5c aparently too:cool:

Well I would lower the Memory Multiplier to x3.0 (maybe even x2.0) before touching the FSB. That'll take it out of the equation.

Open CoreTemp and see what the VID reading is. Then set that reading as the CPU Voltage in BIOS. Then all you'll need to do is raise the FSB about 10-15mhz and then run Orthos for 30-45mins to see if it passes. If it does you can then up another 10-15mhz and run Orthos again. If Orthos fails, or the computer fails to boot after raising the FSB, bump your CPU voltage a notch or two and try again.

But always keep an eye on your temps using CoreTemp when running Orthos. I would keep them under 70c.

Also have a look at the first picture in this excellent post by WJA96 to see what unneeded stuff should be disabled in BIOS before starting.

Core temp is kindly telling me my processor is not an intel:confused:

Now I know I ain't clever at this stuff, but I ain't thick, its definently an Intel:rolleyes:

Ah it probably only reads the Core 2 Duos.

I would set the CPU voltage to 1.275v in BIOS and use something like PC Wizard to keep an eye on the core temp.
