I wouldn't mind pushing my 8500 to nearer 4.5 if possible, half because with my flight sim's, I need every last Mhz, and half because I'm bored unless I'm tinkering.

As I'm currently on a p35 chipset i was wondering if my cpu would see any benefit from upgrading to a p45 or x48?

obviously theres other benifits to the newer chipsets but all i want to know is if i'm likely to get a better overclock on the newer boards?

advice, as always, appreciated.

The P45 is meant to be the best for overclocking but if your chip is already at its limit you might not get any further. Personally I'd give it a try but I'm a bit crazy like that.

A decent P35 board is good for 500FSB with a dual core. So in theory you should be able to get 4.7 before the motherboard becomes a bottleneck. So I dont think you need a P45 for 4.5 enless you wanted to run your ram at 1066 so just give it a try!

FWIW My Gigabyte P35c DS3R (rev 2.0) has been running at 500mhz FSB for ages. Running my E8500 @ 8x500. Not that 500mhz / 4Ghz is the limit but I really can't be bothered to try and push it further as everything runs as I would want it to.

OP - you are running at 4.2 now and want to spend on a new motherboard with the expectation of maybe another 300mhz.!

Then again you also wrote that you are bored :D

the abit ip35 is still a great board in my opinion - i would sooner take that over a p45 board

if you really must push for more - why not consider an x48 like the rampage formula?

other than that - its i7 or PII

If your running your RAM @1066 then I would stick with the board you have 4.2Ghz is a great speed and you will not require any more for a while.

You have a full great gaming system.
