p4 3.2 HT = ??? core 2 duo ?

was trying to compare as I've been offered a 1.6 core 2 duo laptop in exchange for my 3.2 p4 from the insurance company & I.m trying to get everything I can
Thanks people :D

next offering !

sorry but they are now offering one with an AMD TURION 64 X2 TL-56 PROCESSOR 1.6GHz is this still as good or better than an old p4 3.2 HT?

Go for the C2D, IMO. You'll prob get better battery performance too, as the old P4s were pretty good at sucking down the go-juice!

A turion 1.6Ghz would be considerably slower than a 1.6Ghz C2D. In easy terms, averaged out over different tests, I normally consider a C2D to be worth twice its clock rate in terms of P4 technology. So a 1.6 C2D = 3.2Ghz P4 more or less.

But Turion isnt as good, infact its anything like the Athlon64 desktop chips, its upto 40% slower than a C2D. So based on that it would be struggling to beat a 2.2Ghz P4, let alone a 3.2.

Demand an Intel processor, and say any other brand isnt a comparible replacement for your intel based laptop. C2D is faster, and uses less power.

does this apply even though the Turion is dual core as well ?

I'm lucky for this thread as I got both (nearly):
3GHz P4 @ 3.3 Ghz 1Gig ram P4P800-E (my old desktop) and
HP DV8333ea 1.6 core duo 1Gig GeForce 7600

The notebook, evem though a core duo (not core 2 duo) blows the overclocked P4 away in every benchy I try for CPU. Have no fear it is much better, even at 1.6 Ghz.

If we stick to the question at hand. The turion x2 at 1.6ghz will beat the 3.2 ghz p4.

The above posted tomshardware article shows that clock for clock, a turion x2 beats pentium Ms and can give a core duo processor a run for its money.

Either way, itll be much better than you're power hungry p4 laptop. Not to mention in terms of actual value, a turion x2 laptop is far more valuable than a p4 laptop.

I ran my C2D [email protected] for testing purposes.
I found it was faster than my old [email protected], when playing my x264 movies. The P4 would stay at 100% cpu usage, while the [email protected] would not go past 80%.

Also in day to day usage, ie. when opening up internet explorer and opening other applications, the [email protected] was much more snappier.

I would say that I would have needed to drop the C2D down to around 1.2Ghz for it to be comparable to my old [email protected].

try and force the insurance company for a core 2 duo if not go for the turin as both of them woops a p4

It may give a Core Duo a run for its money, but Core duo is about the same performance as an AMD64, so thats no surprise. Core 2 Duo is considerably faster then a Core Duo at any given clock.

I honestly dont believe a turion 1.6 X2 will be able to conclusivly beat a 3.2Ghz P4, whereas the Core 2 Duo most certainly will. Just make sure its Core 2 Duo, thats E5xxx, or E7xxx, and not an old E2xxx Core Duo.

Oops yeah, sorry they are T series, but still T5xxx/7xxx rather than T2xxx which are Core Duo (32bit, and basically just slightly updated Pentium M's)

The differences between Core Duo, and Core 2 Duo are huge, both in terms of performance, and features.
