Trying to find some reviews of this wierd CPU!

Its 3.06GHz / 533MHz bus / 1Mb cache....seems like a cut down Prescott of some description.

I might be building a PC for the sister in law and shes been looking at a PC powered by this CPU, wondering if its any good for general use, MP3 encoding and some video editing (shes just bought a digital camcorder). Think i'd prefer the Athlon 3200+ over this really for her budget (£600-650)...

That cpu is basically a beefed up celeron, it has 1meg cache, but lacks htt.

U can setup a nice cheap rig with one, use a 915p mb and run 200+ fsb takes it to 4ghz easily.

You'd be better off with a 630 which would also fit into your budget.

I'd however wait for cedar mill to hit the shelves in the UK, as they are the 65nm counterpart.

you "may" be able to squeeze a dual core into the equation.

Either a 165, or a 920, or x23800. depending on your preference.

However for what you've listed, there's nothing wrong with the CPU you've chosen, and if you choose the other parts well, (Which are also pretty cheap) you'll be well away with a decent performing budget system.

OK cheers.
Problem is the spec needs to include everything (inc 17" TFT) so dual core is well out of the equation.
I'm wondering whether a A64 3200+ is gonna be a better bet than a P4 630 cus its faster in MP3 encoding but slower in video editing/encoding plus by the time you've added on a P4 mobo with Firewire and a video card its a lot more cash. With the A64 i can use the Asus A8N-VM which has Firewire and onboard GFX (shes not doing any gaming) all for just over £60....cant see a P4 mobo with all this on for a decent price?

I've been looking on Toms Hardware for performance comparisons with the P4 519 and A64 3200+ but obviously the P4 519 isnt there....would a P4 520 be close enough speed wise to a 519 to warrant compaing the A64 3200+ with this?

if editing get the 630 and an asrock or asus mobo and a firewire card for six quid!
The p4's are better in editing andthe 630 has HT.

Asus P5V800-MX Skt 775 Intel 865GV 800FSB PCI-E on board VGA SATA RAID LAN 6 ch.audio Dual-Core compatible micro ATX is 39 quid has onboard gfx etc...

Thanks for the info.
She wont just be doing video encoding though, MP3 encoding will be a large part and the A64 is better for that....swings and roundabouts really!
Comparing a 630 on an i925x board to a A64 3200+ on the NF4 board the 630 aint an awful lot faster...well from Toms tests anyway. Plus the board above is 865 chipset so no doubt is slower than the 925x?

EDIT
Actually isnt it a VIA chipset?

The hyper threading of the p4 is enough to warrant the p4 over the a64 in this case.Shes not playing games so the p4 is the way to go.

About the board the one i gave was an example there are loads:

Asrock 775DUAL-915GL skt 775 i915GL 800FSB DDR400 +on board VGA +AGP 8X +PCI-E SATA single IDE +LAN +USB2.0 +6 ch. audio 45 quid is based on the intel 915 chipset

Asrock 775TWINS-HDTV skt 775 ATI Radeon Express 200 1066FSB X300 VGA PCI-E SATA RAID +LAN +USB2.0 +8 ch. audio micro ATX comes with x300 gfx onboard 45 quid

if she is doing video editing she will be doing encoding as she will need to convert the dv files for authoring to dvd etc....

those will be faster at the stuff she wants to do than an a64 the hyperthreading will help with encoding enough to get it for that task.

The benchmarks beg to differ though?

Granted the 630 is 5secs faster over 3+mins over the 3200+ venice...so what? the A64 is better in MP3 encoding and most other things including some of the multi tasking benchmarks. HT is a bit of a marketing ploy in my book, its still a single core after all.

Aye not bad prices at all....though i tend to avoid Asrock and bargain basement bits personally....its just me! :D

Yes some, not all the time and she'd probably be doing as much MP3 encoding really.

Sorry after looking at benchmarks for the past few days i've got to disagree....hell this is a forum after all though! :p

Thanks for the input matey... ;)

yeah i wouldnt choose a system or cpu on the basis that it does one task slightly faster than the other.

I would look at the whole picture

I mean MP3 encoding hardly tasks any modern cpu.The files are tiny in comparison to crunching a dv file into an mpeg 2 stream.

There are many reviews that praise HT and its merits are justified.Windows sees it as two cpus and makes multitasking are far better experience.

The only way i would choose an amd rig over a intel is for games or if you could afford a dual core x2 or opteron in your budget.

Asrock make good boards on a budget too.(They are made by ASUS BTW).They just have simple packaging and get the job done.

And because you are on a budget and your system budget is including a tft monitor it would be a sensible route to follow.

When it comes down to mp3 (Lame) encoding you're not going to notice that much difference between any decent new processor. I've been encoding mp3's since it would take you the length of the song to do 1. They both get the job done quickly even if she's doing albums at a time.

The new P4's are good for video but AMD's aren't slouches either.

Keeping down cost would seem to be a important factor and for this reason I would go with the AMD route. Especially if you are running this system at stock speeds. Just make sure you have at least 1 gig of memory to keep things as smooth as possible.

Personally I couldn't use a system without HT or Dual Core, but I do a lot of multitasking and during heavy usage HT can keep the system still very usable.

PS. My next motherboard is an ASRock. :)
