hey guys i just aqquired 2 pentium 4 northwood cpus what do these clock like apperntly ones a 2.4 and ones a 2.8 i get them tomorrow mornining there in these 2 small dell machines u think im best pulling them and finding mobos for them ?? by the way ive herd northies clock like stink can anyone confirm this ?

I have a 2.4 Northwood currently sitting at 2.88.
It runs away fine at 3.0 in the winter but I had to edge it back a bit for the summer as it gets a bit toasty running F@H 24/7 (cooling supplied by Freezer 4) - I reckon, with some watercooling, I could probably get it to about 3.2.

If I was you, I'd get them stuck into a half decent mobo and clock them up.
The above clock was with a P4C800E Deluxe - nice board :)

Stan :)

cheers mate ill probably leave one intact for my sister btu my brothers getting into day of defeat source si im giving him my sempron machine i think that runs it ok and ill probably build one of them and clock it :D

Most northwood 800FSB chips are good for 3.5Ghz. Some have been hitting higher. My Northwood 3.0Ghz hits 3.5Ghz.

I have a 2.4 Northwood that's now about 2 and a half to 3 years old that is still running happily at 3.2GHz without a problem. I've also got a 2.6C that runs perfectly at 3.3GHz. Still pretty good processors even to this day.

Not as good as the A64s

The A64 3200+ will perform like a 3.8GHz Northwood for the majority of games

Bare in mind that if you change the motherboards you'll need new PSUs and probably a new case as Dell use non standard kit :)

I had a Northwood 2.8GHz (533fsb) and upgraded to a 2GHz Opteron. I noticed a large boost in performance with them both at stock but I feel that the NW was underperforming (cheap and nasty SiS motherboard with no clocking options)

i have clocked a few 2.8's for family and friends and all seem to get a nice result

mine does 3.6 at it's stable limit on air.
Been running it for ages at 3.5 (in an old machine with pc2700) with zero issues. When I upgraded it from my games machine to a 3500 there was a noticeable boost but it performs great in my jobbing machine (photoshop/encoding etc)

northwoods are better at games than prescotts iirc

Acording to Tom's Hardware guid the Northwood's trail the Prescotts, not by much mind but they do come in second place out the two.

nope i just checked toms and in most tests the northwood is slightly faster at the same clock speed sorry

edit : apart from 3dmark

Yes you are right.

I only checked Doom 3 and 3d Mark 2005 as those are all I use out of those given progs.

Northwood>Prescott.

Clock for clock, the Northwood is nearly always quicker than the prescott apart from in a few very specific situations. However the changes made to Prescott were mainly to allow for higher scaling in terms of CPU speed, so generally that's to be expected.

The northwoods are pretty nippy chips. To be frank when I moved from Pentium 4 3.0Ghz to AMD Athlon 64 3000+ last year, I saw no noticeable difference between the two, until the AMD was overclocked.
