Hi,
Currently ive got a P4 Prescott 3.2 775 cpu which i cant overclock because of my motherboard.

Anyways i was just wondering would i see any difference in gaming if i upgraded to a AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 90nm (Socket 939)?

I was thinking about getting the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ but is there any point if i dont multitask?

Thanks
John

The Athlon 64 3700+ will give you a big improvement in performance.
They overclock really well too.

Dual cores will be more & more utilised in the not too distant future.
So if i was upgrading now i would opt for the X2 3800+ (they also overclock really). Games are being patched to utilize dual cores now as well, & supposedly the Unreal 3 engine (UT 2007 etc) will use dual cores too afaik.

Both AMD chips will also run cooler.

Hold on another 4 months for Intels Conroe as thats due in July @ the earliest.

You would then only need to buy a new mobo + CPU and could reuse your DDR2 ram + all your other components. AMD do not currently support DDR2 Ram.

Best of all for approx £450 (£300 for the CPU + £150 for the mobo) you would have a very quick system which should according to the benchmarks released last week beat an FX60 overclocked to FX62 speeds.

wait and see what conroe is really like, when people like us have it in their hands. If they really are that good (and they are looking to be) then go conroe and like somebody else saide, you'll save on the ram.

Its only a few months, wait it out mate.

Sorry to be a n00b but my ram isnt DDR2 is it anyways? The ram ive got is 4 of these GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS2.5.

And to upgrade to a Asus A8N-VM CSM Micro ATX (Socket 939) PCI Express Motherboard (MB-119-AS) and a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3800BVBOX) (CP-134-AM) would be around £260 which is a lot less than the 450 notes that you are saying now?

ahh. right ok, im sorry i forgot there were 775 boards with ddr support. In thatr case a64 would be cheaper then, but there wont be much in it.

regardless i still recommend you just wait. prices will be cheaper, and you can pick from the best. i'd hate for you to buy an AMD system now only for everybody else to move to a cheaper, faster conroe system in 3 months time.

Thanks for that ill take your advice and wait! im in no rush really! tar very muchly!

Consider spending your upgrade money on a newer faster gfx card now as if you already have a pci-e mobo that will be a worthwhile upgrade FPS wise. Consider stretching to an X1900 as they are currently pretty cheap for the performance on offer. Nvidia need to reduce prices more like ATI as they are poor VFM now.
