okay guys,

so i havn't had a job for nearly 2 years and, now that i have applied for a few places i need my p45 but i have lost it...

so how do i go about getting another one and ideas and help would be appreciated.

And please don't moan on how long i've been without and job and what i've doing.

Thanks.....!

You don't really have to have it as long as you don't mind emergancy tax for a while until it gets sorted out. Or you can send away a form for a new one i think.

If you've been on the dole then they'll send you a new shinying p45 when you sign off.

Otherwise I'm not sure, you'd probably just be dumped on an emergency tax code for a month, and you'll get it back the following month.

talk to your job centre.

They have loads of people just waiting to help.

I confused them one day when I said I wanted to transfer my dole to Belgium.

Want to have seen the dust fly off their folders and the poor woman start to sweat whilst rifling aimlessly through her files trying to find out how to go about it.

Still I'm sure your question is much more common and easily sloved.

It's the tax man who sends it out so have a look at their website.

What is a P45, P46 and P91?
If you are leaving one job to start another it is important to get a P45 from your employer. This is a form that shows:

Your PAYE code
Your total earnings so far in the tax year
How much tax you have paid since the start of the tax year.
The pay and tax details for the employment just ended.
It is most important you are given a P45. If you do not get one, you may find you have to pay more tax in your new job until your correct PAYE code is confirmed.

A P45 is made up of 3 parts, you should keep Part 1A as a record of your pay and tax and hand the P45 Parts 2 and 3 to your new employer as soon as possible so the right amount of tax is taken from your pay.

If for some reason you don't have a P45 and are starting a new job, your new employer will give you a form P46 which you can sign. If you sign statement B on the form, a temporary PAYE code will be operated for you.

The Tax Office will then try to trace your previous employer so they can give you your proper code. If they can't, they will send you a form P91 asking you for details of your previous job(s). In the meantime, your new employer will continue to use the 'emergency code' for you.

If you go straight to a job when you leave school or college, your new employer will give you a form P46 that you can sign. You can then be given a PAYE code based on the personal allowance for people under 65. Your employer will use this code on your first payday and send the P46 to the Tax Office to let them know you have started work.

You should tell your employer your National Insurance (NI) number as soon as you start work or change jobs. You will also need to quote it whenever you get in touch with the Tax Office because they use it as a tax reference number. If you do not know your NI number, ask at any Department of Social Security Office.

Uh, unless you are going to get paid weekly or biweekly it is unlikely you will be paid before christmas at all.

Depends on the company - some pay in advance, some in arrears, some half/half - if the last case and payday is 15th, if you start on the 1st Dec you'll get paid on the 15th :)

Doesn't the P46 get around issues with lost P45s?

Some company's also pay earlier on December aswell.

Yes p46's do get around lost p45's. I recently started a new part time job and couldnt find my p45, i filled in a p46 on one of my first days the manager said he sent it off. Got my 3rd months pay few weeks back and im STILL on emergency tax. Next pay day is 9th December, would ringing the tax office make them get a move on, put me on the correct code and make sure i get all my tax back?

If you haven't had a job for nearly two years then you shouldn't need a P45.

As far as I was aware all they were used for was to inform the next employer of how much you have earned in that tax year.
In your case this would presumably be zero.

Haircut is right.

All a P45 does is inform your new employer of the tax code you were on previously, and your earnings to date in the tax year so that they can continue to tax you correctly.

So any P45 from before 6 April 2006 is useless to you. You will need to complete a P46 for your new employer. You will need to tick statemenbt a, which says that thsi si your only job since 6 April and you have not had any jobseekers allowance. You will then be put on 503L (on a cumulative basis) meaning you will receive the full benefit of your allowances.

If you have had any income so far this year, then obviously, don't tick A or you may not pay enough tax, and gat a bill after the end of the year, you should tick B.
