I am thinking of getting one of these boards for a new HTPC core duo build. One thing I am concerned about is whether is supports raid 1 with two internal sata drives as in the specifications it lists raid 0/1 support via 1 internal and 1 external connection.

Can someone who owns one of these kindly let me know if this is the case.

No - the ICH8 doesn't allow RAID, but you can use the JMIcron controller to set up a second pair of drives inside the machine if you pass a cable through a PCI port at the back. The JMicron controller is very poor though.

Are you certain about that because I have just ordered this board and in the manual it clearly states that the intel controller which has 6 SATA connetors does support RAID. Im not going to be happy if this isnt the case.

Where did you see the specification? The board only has 5 internal SATA connectors - 4 down by the Southbridge chip and one between the PCIe graphics card slot and the processor socket. You need ICH8R to get RAID and it really does only have ICH8. Download the manual off *** ASUS website and see for yourself. Plus, if what you are saying is true, and you have seen anadvertisement that says 6 SATA connectors with RAID then why did you ask the question in the first place? I suppose it does technically have 6 SATA ports and RAID.

[EDIT]Just noticed what you are saying about the manual - what manual have you got. Page 1-8 of the manual has the board diagram and it doesn't have 6 internal SATA ports. We are talkling about the P5B-VM and not the P5B?

No need to get shirty, I was only asking a question. Someone wrote a user review about the board on another site and it said that the only way to get RAID was to use 1 internal and 1 external connector. So i thought I would download the user manual from the ASUS website and it clearly states:-

The Intel ICH8DO chipset incorporates six Serial ATA connectors with high performance RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 functions.

Just wanted to know for sure from someone who actually owns one.

Also page 1-8 does have the board layout and it does show 7 internal SATA connectors. The manual filename is : e2869_p5b-vm-do.pdf.

[Edit] I have just found out where the confusion is, it looks like Asus do several flavours of this board with slightly different codes after the model name i.e. P5B-VM DO etc.
