This might be an old question, but why does my P5K-E never start up first time? The unit powers on but doesn't seem to POST, and just hangs. If i leave it a minute or two then restart, i'll POST and boot successfully. I don't actually mind doing this if it's a known fault, but i'm getting worried and it's a poor show if you got people round and you're trying to get some music on ASAP or whatever.

Your not talking about the double reset issue are you?

I've not had problems with mine posting first time, but after going in bios, and when reseting the system will often double reset, which is meant to happen (to do with the crash free bios)

I've seen that issue where I think it's changing the strap.

I'm talking about a cold boot when the pc has been off for hours (after work, or first thing in the morning).

I'm also experiencing problems when changing the overclock settings in the BIOS makes no difference whatsoever.

i'm thinking its your psu about to die, i had this problem with my old system, that was a NF7-s mobo, from a cold boot in the morning it would not boot, it took about an hour for it to warm up and boot.
In the end the psu took out the mobo and i had to move onto a Asus P5K-E Wifi mobo, which as been working fine for hmmmmmmm about a month now.

I have had this with my P5K Deluxe and Maximus Formula. I Don't know why it does it, but its nothing to worry about!

No probs i feel a bit better now. As I said, I don't mind the odd cold boot problem as I can power it on, wait a minute for it to warm up then restart it successfully. My PSU is under a year old (Galaxy 1000w) and although I had SLI before, it's not getting pushed anywhere to it's capacity. The warranty will cover it if it blows, it's not the end of the world :)

Sounds like the same issue that I'm having with my P5K.

The first time I powered up afetr building the machine a couple of days ago I thought I had a dead one on my hands when nothing happened. I spend ages in a panic trying to pin down which component had failed. Then I pressed reset by mistake and up came the BIOS screen!

I've been told that this may be a memory issue but I'm not entirely convinced. I've tried it with various configurations and permutations of sticks: 1x1GB, 2x1GB and 4x1GB and get the same problems.

How much memory have you got installed? I was hoping to get 4GB and bought 2 sets of matched Corsair XMS2 6400 memory. Then I read the P4K manual that states "...a total memory of less than 3GB is recommended".

There is a memory issue with many P35 boards if you have higher speed stuff. Default speed and voltage is (IIRC) 800 and about 1.80V, which much 1066 stuff can't boot at. I've now taken to using an old stick of 800 stuff to get POST, changing the speed and voltage to 1066 and 2.10V, then shutting down and changing to the proper RAM. The same thing will happen if you clear CMOS as it resets ther RAM setting again.
