Basically I've never had any experience with raid before, and I'm about to set up a raid 1 array using 2x Samsung F1 1Tb drives for my data. Is it going to be straight forward or can I expect problems.

I don't know if this is an issue; but all my sata ports will be in use:-

2x sata dvd rw
2x F1 1TB
1x raptor 36GB
1x 250GB

Any advice etc would be very helpful :)

Thanks

Via x64 Vista?

It *should* be straight-forward as Vista tends to have the RAID drivers built-in (adding a RAID to an XP install is a frigging nightmare).

First thing I would do is change the BIOS option from IDE to RAID and see if Vista boots ok. If it does then you can add the disks and set up the RAID.

with mine, I set up a RAID array on the motherboard settings with 2 old 36GB Raptors and just stuck the Vista DVD in and it found it and installed on it no problems. Not using that for windows anymore since I got a 500GB 7200.11 But it was pretty straight forward.

One more thing, not sure if it'll affect vista but I just did this out of habit - when I installed vista I unplugged all the hard drives that weren't in the array because XP used to install some stuff on my IDE drive if I left it plugged in, so if I took out the IDE, it wouldn't boot unless I'd installed XP with no IDE drive.

Thanks for the advice!

I'll be trying it later tonight, so will post back with either success or failure :p

Cheers.

Yes, I'll just be coping data off my two 300GB IDEs onto the 1TB raid 1, will this be easier then?

Not really. I've a feeling Vista wont throw up when you activate RAID in the BIOS. XP on the otherhand would refuse to get past the loading screen if you hadn't installed the RAID drivers when you first installed it. Usually involves a complete reinstall of XP using the RAID drivers.

As I said above, try activating RAID before you add the drives and see if Vista loads ok.

Try switching the boot drive over to the JMicron ports. If that works you should be able to put it back onto the Intel ports after installing the RAID drivers.

If that doesn't work then use the JMicron ports for the RAID rather than the Intel ports.

Sorry? lol

Are the JMicron the black ports?

Also there is loads of stuff about the P5K Premium not working with Sata drives well at all :(

Yeah the black ports are the JMicron ports. They're independent from the intel ports and swirching the Intel ports to RAID shouldn't affect them.

JMicron didn't recognize any drives when both of my F1's were plugged into the blacks. Messed about with only using a selection of SATA devices. As it BSOD when loading vista now re-installing vista with only my raptor and my F1's configured in RAID 1. WIll post back on outcome.

Cheers

**Update :D

I have reinstalled Vista 64, and everything "appears" to be working.

On boot up, my raid display is shown, and then in Vista the array appears as a single drive, so I assume that this means that it is all working :o

Big thanks to Cob and Rebelius for the advice :p

Cheers

Thanks, will do.

I believe the reason it would bsod before when loading Vista, was because the raid drivers weren't installed..... Hear me out lol... As when you select install all on the support cd for the P5K, it won't install the raid drivers unless an array is present (which it wasn't at the time of installing). :p

So now Intel Matrix Manager says all is well :D

Cheers again.
