Ok, so recently the board won't allow me to run 2 sticks of 1GB OCZ Ram (memtest errors on stock settings) together in dual, but Memtest indicates both sticks have no errors when testing individual. I ran dual in the black slots for over a year now, but i've RMA'ed this board before with memory problems and alas it's happened again.

Basically, I don't want to have to keep RMA'ing this board because the memory slots are built below par.

So what motherboard do you guys think I should get?

I'm running an E4300@3GHz (so would like a nice oc'ing board if/when I get a new CPU), 2GB of OCZ RAM (DDR2 please), 9800GTX+ and a Corsair HX 620W. I may want to SLi in the future, so would like an SLI motherboard, but am open to Intel boards if you can convince me. :D

Obviously the cheaper the better, but I want quality this time round.

Asus P5Q Deluxe or Asus Rampage Extreme. No SLI board convince me after I bin my P5N32-E SLI. GPU nowaday so powerful so SLI or CrossFire its a wasted unless you are benching.

Avoid asus and go with a gigabyte P45 board imo.

Asus motherboards are just a joke any more imo way too many problems with them and sub-standard component quality.

I agree i am now on my second P5ne-sli board and it causes me problems and its only about 1 month old on my first one the memory slot failed and then the lan port failed also.

So, do you think I should just carry on using 1GB for now and wait for any new motherboards/CPU's?

I got a P5N-E and 4GB of Geil Ultra DDR2, no problems. Upped the voltage to 2.1v and overclocked slightly and its working fine.

Ive had a few as well this year, mainly as i like changing and trying something different.

So far in ther last few months ive had :

P5G-MX
P5N-T SLI
P5N-D
P5K
P5N32-E

Had loads more asus boards before that too.

My P5N-E has worked for approx 18 mths with 4 sticks, still runs fine. But you clearly do have problems unfortunately, so I'd recommend P5Q Deluxe. I have one and it is a very nice board. Plenty of other nice boards too no doubt..

Asrock 4Core1600TWINS P35

Basically a mildly cut-down ASUS P5K Premium WiFi/AP for £45. And it supports DDR3 too if you fancy trying that.

Actully got my old man to build a new system around asrocks new p35 board, the intel chipset seemed pretty promising. For the price its ok and stable enough if you dont push for a high overclock. For some reason it really doesnt like 800fsb processors even with a bios update, pretty sure its down to some sort of fsb strap issue.
It looks like it runs a 4phase PWM stage so overclocking a quad maybe a little limited. I have a feeling a wolfdale chip would be a good match for it.
I think its safe to say it would be a viable cheap upgrade from you old p5n-e though.

Cheers lads, after what's been said here and doing my own research, i'm almost certain the P5Q Deluxe will be my next board. My problem wasn't ever really with Asus, just the cheaper versions. The "Deluxe" version with all it's praise on the net seems to be what i'm after.

Which P35 ASRock exactly? There are 4 of them:eek:

Basically they are ASUS old P5K range made in the ASRock factory (ASRock is like Mini to BMW, different brand, different marketing, same technology).

A P5Q deluxe will get the OP very little over a P35 (or even an N650i) board with his current CPU. None of the P35 or P45 boards like 800MHz FSB CPUs, but they will clock them higher than the P5N-E and given that it's likely to be a very short time until everyone wants to swap to the next generation, why spend £125+ on a motherboard for a last generation CPU?

And as P5N-E's still go for £40 Incl. second hand I think you could almost cover your costs of the swap if you bought a cheap P35 board and RMA'd the P5N-E Sli and then sold it when it returned.

Yup, there are suitable differences, 2 have built in wifi and 2 don’t and the P35D version comes with solid caps all round. The P35Ds seem to be favoured over on the ***** forum so we went with that version as there was no real price difference. It’s a nicer board than the 4 coredual sata2 he used before and equally as reliable as his old asrock 939dual-sata2, but just like those boards little aspects remind you that it is budget mb.

Cheers WJA96, your advice has made me rethink my purchase.

I shall wait for new tech and stick with my P5N-E with 1GB. Only Crysis, Warhead and encoding really benefit from 2GB anyway.

Kaiju, just out of interest have you flashed the board to the latest bios? early versions definitely had frequency holes, doesnt really explain why your system ran stable with two sticks before though.

Yes, it's on 1101 at the moment, the latter BIOS don't have any benefit for me.

I've always flashed the BIOS when i've had any problems, thanks for the concern.
