just got one of these second hand for my system, is there anything i should know about it? ie is there any little pointers to overclocking one of these as the manual is pretty limited in what each option does. but from the look of it there are lots of settings that can be tweaked, unlike my biostar.
 
due to the lack of replies to the original question, and not wanting to make another thread on the same topic, can some explain a little bit about what these settings are and what are 'safe' max settings. thanks.

I cannot assist in providing definitions of all the Bios terms you have listed - do not have sufficient knowledge!!

However am running and have been running for some months now this board with a q9650 + 2x2gb 1066 ram @ 4ghz , which equates to 400fsb (on your chip 400x7.5= 3ghz) which would be a nice starter for you - I hope !

From what I have read and with my own experience of q9550/q9650 chips 400mhz should be easily attainable :)

Only concern I have is with you using 4x1gb of ram - I am aware that using all 4 slots for ram places a greater strain on your Northbridge which can lead you to either reducing your overclock to get it stable or incresing your Northbridge volts to a 'silly' level.

Would suggest that you try with just 2 sticks to start with and assuming its stable go to all 4 later - Yours may be o'k ;)

I cannot remember the actual Bios settings I'm using but should get chance to look 'em up this afternoon and can advise you how I've clocked to 400fsb etc which I hope might help you.

What vid does your chip have ?

What is the voltage that your ram needs (manufacturers recomend) to run at its spec. speed?
 
i was running the q8300 on my biostar mobo at 3.2GHz without any problems, but that mobo only had limited options so was only fsb and vcore increases.

Having re-read the details provided under the above find myself a little confused (easy at my age :D)
Do you have 2 x 1gb 1066 ram ; and
2x 1gb 800 ram.

I.e ram with differing speeds ?

Sorry if I've totally misunderstood :confused:

BTW my proposal ref providing my settings for 400 fsb any use to you? - Would not be at all insulted if you advised that you were looking for something else !
 
no i have 2 sets of the 2x1gb ddr 1066.

think i got up to 425fsb on the biostar stable, which i was happy with, but like i said there was only 2 changes to be made, up the fsb and vcore, this board seems a lot more indepth so any help would be appreciated.

Intel check each chip (or at least each batch of chips) as to what voltage it needs to run at its quoted speed. - its 'vid'

In general the lower the vid the better (although this is occasionally disproven!) as the lower the volts needed the lower the temps. and the more clocking headroom you have.

TBH I know that I left a lot of settings on auto .:D

Certainly manually changed the fsb/vcore/ram speed & ram voltage and may be others. Will as said have a good look this afternoon and advise.

Having checked my q9650 box - NO , unfortunately.

My main reason for asking the ? is that it gives you a good idea as to the voltage that your chip needs.

Asus boards have a habit of pushing a bit too much voltage through a chip on Auto - Partic. if you overclock.

the vid of my chip is 1.1250 but it will not run 4ghz with these volts .had to increase to 1.1875 (I think).

the previous Q9550 chip I had had a vid of 1.2375 but ran @3.4 (400fsb again)at 1.1875 . had to put 1.2250 volts through to get it stable @3.6 (fsb 424) tho which dramatically increased the temps :(

Further thought - check your Bios is up to date .

Had problems when I initially installed the q9650 chip - would not boot . one Bios update later - no problems
