Hey guys, have had an MSI P67A-C45 mobo for a month now, been a great board so far. I recently changed gfx card and since then when gaming ive noticed my chipset temps sky rocket into the 100's, surely thats not normal? On my previous gfx card the temps never got above 65c. System isnt clocked and i think i have decent airflow (cpu/gfx temps all look normal).

Are these chipsets known to get so hot or am i looking at a duff board

It may be that the software your using to monitor the chipset temps isn't reading it correctly.

What are you using to monitor the chipset temp and have you updated the BIOS lately?

If you haven't done so already, make sure you have the latest release of the app that you're using to monitor your temps.

Bios hasnt been updated and ive been using realtemp, speedfan and CCC, all show the same temps. Im inclined to believe the mobo temp reading as when you touch the heatsink on the board, it's scorching hot :(

Yeah it seems pretty solid, no play in it at all. It sits at about 43c idle in win7, ive searched like mad for similar problems, there have been the odd report of the C43 board hitting stupid temps(120-30c) .

What's your entire spec - it's odd that the problem started with the introduction of a new gfx card?

If your readings are correct and airflow isn't being compronmised then i would contact MSI and seek advice on acceptable operating temps (although they seem far too high) or known erroneous readings.

If they reply saying it's abnormal i would attach the reply to an RMA request to the retailer and get the board swapped out.

Spec is, i5 2300, 4gig of corsair xms 1600, gfx was an ATI 4850, now it's an XFX 6870 Black Edition. Case is a Bitfenix Shinobi with plenty of airflow. Coolermaster GX550 psu.

Ive sent a note to MSI on their forum, reading up it seems the Tjmax is 108c :/

The XFX 6870 Black Edition is a double slot card and i 'imagine' that it does cover the MB heatsink significantly more than your old 4850?

It maybe that the 6870 is transferring more heat to the MB chipset or blocking airflow but i would expect the front intake fan to disperse the heat build up.

Have you double checked that all your case fans are spinning and at the correct rpm at load?

Yeah the card covers the heatsink quite badly but the airflow is good to that part of the case as i like the gfx cards to get as much cool air as possible. I guess it could be possible that the card being so close could make the temps rise a lot. Ive ordered an aftermarket cooler for the card as even though it runs cool'ish, the noise is just WTF!!! I guess i'll see if the added space the new cooler gives the chipset drops the temps, if not i guess i'll have to RMA :(
