i just got myself a asus p8z68 v motherboard with a intel i5 2500k 3.3 cpu

i got good cooling but i was wondering what is the best way to oc on this board, its going to be my first oc so im not sure if i should do it auto o manual....any suggestions?

also running 2x2gb corsair xms3 @ 1600 and a nice freezer 13

thanks in advance

Run the auto OC first and see what you get, some get as high as 4.8ghz some (like me) get as low as 4.3ghz. But once the auto OC is complete it can be as easy as going into the bios and changing the MP and blck to suit your needs, I'm currently on 4.7ghz (100x47 2600k) with the same settings the auto set, I may look into dropping the voltage next week.

I also have the same cooler as you (pro version though) and my temps at 4.7ghz under prime are in the low 60's. When I get round to getting bolts thin enough I'm going to try rigging up 2 after market pwm fans for a push/pull setup to see if the temps drop any lower.

sweet cheers pgi going to give it a try now :P im running a antec 900 with a nice 120mm typhoon on the side, il have to see what kind of temps i get.

also my ram is running at 1333 is that right?

ty in advance

No, but mine did the same, once you have OC'd you may need to select the profile drop down in the bios and select 'x.m.p.' and then change the ram speed to 1600mhz. You could do this before but the auto OC will probably set it back to 1333mhz, so do it after.

Let us know what speeds you get and what settings the bios uses and I/we will help you tweak it if needed.

right iv done a auto oc and running prime95 at 100% load its running at 4.3 with temps of mid/upper 50's (im happy with that)

turbo target is at 4.2 :/

btw whats the diff between the bios auto oc and the on the AI suite?

Nothing there the same thing. Go into bios>advanced and tell me what the blck and MP is set to, you should be able to take it higher.

Try bumping the MP up in single increments then stress testing see what you can get stable. 4.5-4.6 should be easily do-able.

Ideally, a good few hours, but if the OC is really unstable a few mins of stress could cause a BSOD, keep an eye on temps + voltages.

Personally I've just done my OC's gradually over a few months, give each OC a 15 min prime95 blend test, then game with it for a few weeks for real world use, if its fine i'll push it up further, at 4.7ghz so far, going to aim for 4.8 and above once I've modded my cooler.

this is running prime95 at full load.

this is idle

i have not changed anything in the bios settings just used the auto oc.

how does it look?

KJ

ok-ish, as predictied the auto-OC has bumped the blck up and dropped MP (103x42 rather than 100x43), it wouldn't hurt to go into the bios and drop the blck back down to 100 and raise the MP to either 43 or 44.

The idle temps do look a shade high, but that depends on your case and other fans, mine usually sit at around 26-27c on idle, but its nothing to worry about. Though you load temps do also look maybe a little high for 4.3ghz, but again dependant on your case and cooling setup.

well i went and made some changes as you said, now running at 4.4...blck back down to 100 and MP up to 44

yea my case might need 1 or 2 more fans, im using a antec 900 with a 120mm typhoon side fan+ the antec case fans.

does it all look ok now to use? ofc i run prime95 for a good few hours and see how it goes, just want to make sure its a safe and stable oc.....dont want to fry any of my **** xD

BTW i didnt change any of the other bios options apart from the 1600 ram setting. any i might have missed?

ty <3

ok so after running prime9 for a good few short periods i myself am happy with the results but as im new to oc'sing do you think it would be a ok oc to use just for gaming as thats all i do.

i didnt rly want to push it too far as my temps seem a bit high but i think im happy with my 4ghz

4ghz should be fine for most, what resolution are you gaming at? depending on your GPU(S) and resolution your CPU 'might' start to bottleneck your graphics cards. But in most cases you should be fine.

If your happy with 4ghz then leave it there, at least you know in the future you can take the chip higher at relative ease as and when required.

And no, the auto-OC should have seen to making sure all the voltage settings etc.. are fine. Voltages all look fine to me, from what I've read around the forums about 1.44v is a kind of 'safe maximum' but is advised to stay under that.

Going to measure up my FP13 tonight for modding, if I pull it off I'll post up pics/temps of before and after, if it works it might be something worth trying for your self.

yea im happy with it, this is a new build for bf3 im running a msi gtx460 hawk super oc and my res is at 1920x1080.

tbh i played bf3 alpha on my old system (lol q8200 at 2.2 LOL) and it was ok so this new i5 should be fine.

keep me posted :D
