Single mothers will be able to check if their boyfriends are sex offenders under a pilot scheme to protect children in four police areas, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said on Sunday.

And vice versa I hope. Will fathers be able to see if prospective wifes have violent histories, or also have committed offences in the past?

Why only sex offences surely a child being beaten up is also something to be wary about?

What happens about those guys who've been dragged through the courts on a rape charge, only for it to be found out later that the woman felt guilty and lied? Are those charges disclosed?

surely the men of this country could sue the hell out of the government for sexual discrimination?

edit: regardless of if they have a record or not.

Something as minor as "urinating in a public place" is actually enough to get you on the Sex Offenders list.
I can only assume that such a check will only flag if they are or aren't on such a list.

Once again, thanks mainly to the media and press, the country is in panic mode.
Woman decides to do a check on her potential boyfriend.
Potential boyfriend accepted a caution for having a "slash" in a public place one night after a few too many beers.
The check comes back as "Yes, sex offender".
Woman leaves potential boyfriend and then tells anyone and everyone that this bloke is a sex offender.

*Sigh*
We all know how this is going to end.

Will the prospective GF need the guys agreement to do the check, or will paranoid Pammy down the road be able to do one on everyone in the street?

I'm not sure where I stand on this. On one hand it's good that women can find out the dark past of a potential partner. On the other hand you can get on the sex offenders list for doing things which aren't sexual offences (i.e. having a slash in the street). Perhaps if they disclosed the actual offence and not just the fact they're on the list, it may work.

From the article it seems only Mothers can do it for potential partners. Jacqui Smith says she doesn't want to drive them further underground. If anyone can do the checks exactly that will happen. She doesn't know her face from her **** though so I don't have much hope.

Or sex with a bike, or the pavement. :D Then there are crimes that have nothing to do with children like necrophillia and bestiality. How specific will the information be?

Why can't single fathers do the same check, more government sexism?

How will this get past the Data Protection Act? At the moment, 'sensitive personal data' can only be disclosed with the individual's consent.

Unfortunatley anything wierd = your a paedophile. Just ask anyone on a council estate.

Can of worms. Open.

What next? Checking if the did other crimes?

A slippery slope all in the name of : "Won't somebody think of the children?"

Unfortunately this is the sad attitude from a lot of people.
I expect if you asked these "people" if their young sons were safe with a gay man most would answer no - seems to be some general thought between them that gay means they want to sleep with young boys.

You mentioned "council estates" and yes, unfortunately not wishing to sound horrible that does sound about right.
However I'm not entirely sure who is most to blame.
These people for their lack of education and knowledge or the media for hyping us all up into thinking there is a child molestor behind every door and on every street.

When I was a kid we vanished at 9:00am on a Saturday morning and the next time my parents would see me would be around 6:00pm when it was time for tea (sometimes we'd be home for lunch, quite often not).
Was their any panic when I rolled home?
No - just a "friendly" reminder not to bring mud into the house.
These days if your a kid and you're out of contact with your parents for an hour then there is a full-scale man hunt for you.
It isn't as if there are any more "paedo's" around these days....

Doesn't have to be anything weird either, wasn't there something about a paediatrician being targeted on some council estate a few years back or am I imagining things?
