You must mean you were about to reinstall windows and came across the folder.

If this is another one of your "wind ups", then its pathetic.

If you're telling the truth, calling the police is your only real option dude.

If it was one of my mates, I'd give them the chance to explain. If the answer didnt satisfy for any reason, then I'd be reporting it.

I ask becasue I am curious as to where a half-bright padeo would keep something like that and not expect you to find it...

I'd be taking it with me if I really suspected foul play, but everything is recoverable if you have the right tools.

I dont know, but if it was a close mate, no way would I just go behind their back without them knowing. Doesn't mean I'd be dropping the issue by any means.

Report him to the police - if hes innocent he'll be ok, however he may panic and say "Well my mate was fixing my pc..." so be prepared.

Edit: You could tell him you saw it, then he can either hand himself in - or you'll do it for him.

You can do a clean install without formatting. You still end up with a fresh windows build, but all data not overwritten will still be accessible.

Anyways, enough OT.

Either way it has to be reported to the police. They are better at investigation than any of us here would be, I'd imagine... the way I see it is that if he talks to his friend, his friend may try to influence him. He's not going to say "yeah, do you care to walk me down to the police station" and if a friend comes up with a story about how it wasn't his fault but then says "what if the police thought that I did it, when I am realy innocent" the OP might be asked to try a cover up... also, whats to stop his friend throwing an accusation against the OP as well.

I say, hand it over to the police and let them sort it out

In fact all we have to go on is a big thread entitled PAEDOPHILE and a single comment that says "my mate has a folder with child porn".. obviously it's a very tainted and not very objective question. The obvious answer is to report him to the police but who knows what the specifics really are.

Ok then, just to clarify, if I was in this position I would probably be *both* talking to my mate, and the police.

cbs is right in that, even if your mate is innocent, the mere presence of such material warrants attention. If you really know this guy, what you might find is that he had no idea, and may want to report it himself anyway.
