Hi Guys

I currently have 16GB of Ram and No page file on my windows 64bit gaming rig.
I have windows installed on a 128GB SSD so I didnt want to have a large page file on that drive. Recently I have been getting errors in windows that I am out of Memory and the program needs to close. Upon checking task manager I noticed that Steam, Origin and Firefox all use the most memory.

Can anyone tell me what I should do? Should I have a small page file or continue to do with out?
Is there anything I can do to stop this happening?

You suggestions welcomed

Chris

It is recommended to have the page file on the SSD.

A quote from Microsoft/Technet forums
Pagefile is exactly the kind of thing you want on your SSD. Taking it off negates one of the biggest advantages of owning one, since most of the stuff in the pagefile is small reads/writes at which SSD's excel. If you wanna limit its size, fine, but dont disable it or move it to another drive.

Windows 8 is very good when it comes to SSD, and knows what to do. One thing I would do though is adjust the size of the pagefile. But as far as the rest of it, I would let W8 deal with that. As mentioned earlier it is well optimized for SSDs unlike Vista. Moving things around may very well hurt the speed rather than improve it.

I too have 16Gb of RAM and have my page file set at 800mb min (min Win8.1 allows) and 1.2gb max. I wouldn't normally use one but some apps I use need one to operate.

A modern SSD will be fine with the pagefile on that. I have a 2gb pagefile on my 64gb SSD and the expected lifetime is still over 8 years (bought 2/3 years ago).

If you have had no performance issues without a pagefile, then you could try setting it to be very small and then increase its size until you stop getting memory error messages. Maybe start at the smallest size it will let you have and just keep doubling it each time you get errors until they stop.

Don't leave windows to manage it, with 16GB ram windows will act super smart and eat 24-32GB of your SSD.

Amazing how some people upgrade their hardware to be in with the times but don't adapt their train of thought or knowledge of an operating system to match.

FTR: 800MB min and 2048MB max on my Win7 machine (SSD/16GB RAM).

hmm lets create a ram disk and stick the page file on there, sort of cheating :D

.. it's silly to stick it on your storage (mechanical?) drive

Something else I keep hearing about and that I have to learn. Is a pagefile what handles data if, for example, other resources get too bogged down?

It's more complex than that. People seem to think disabling it will extend the life of their SSD or 'force' Windows to use their RAM. It's nonsense.

Disabling pagefile has no benefit even with loads of memory. Windows will use it when it runs out of RAM. Some software will also refuse to run without a pagefile.
If you disable pagefile and run out of memory you will start seeing crashes.

If you have loads of RAM then select 800mb (min required in Win8.1) and ~1.5/2Gb max.

I have 16GB and when i turned off pagefile photoshop would crash after extended periods. Now i use a 800mb - 1200mb pagefile
