Ensure that the walls are dry and free of grease. For grease, wash the walls down with sugar soap. Mask off all surfaces you wish to protect. Then look for and fill any cracks, for deep cracks fill in layers allowing adequate drying time between applications. Once dry, sand them down and give the room a hoovering to keep the dust down.
