Any recommendations on a brand and type of paint for our kitchen? We need some plain white for the ceiling and a splash of colour for the walls.

I've used Homebase own stuff before which was awful, and I'm fairly sure we had some Dulux stuff that we ended up using twice as much as was recommended as it just didn't seem to sit evenly on the wall (possibly my fault rather than the paint!).

I've seen the Dulux trade stuff gets good review, but from what I can see the normal DIY outlets only stock the neutral colours.

Any advice?

Have you not got a place near where they mix paint? We have a few around here and i buy Dulux. Great paint. Own brand DIY shop stuff is rubbish!!

dulux 100% of the time. I would never buy any other brand of paint again.

I can tell you that OCUK folk love absolutely love EGGSHELL lol
not matt, not silk but EGGSHELL

I've just done our master bedroom with Dulux, been pleased with coverage and ease of application.

I have heard good things about Dulux Endurance for kitchen/bathrooms - apparently "wipe clean" isn't an understatement. :)

Dulux decorator center for all my paint now, you pay a little more but its less pain and covers better.

Last paint I bought was from Johnstones matching a Farrow & Ball colour we liked, was excellent.

Have also used Little Greene which was excellent, but expensive.

In future I'll be back to Johnstones for a colour match.

Johnstones or Leyland are very good. We use them an awful lot at work theese days. Crown is still quite decent too, but dulux is pretty poor, even the trade stuff. Theyre living off the good name that they used to have imho.

Had a look at that when we were doing our house, couldn't believe how much it was.
Used Dulux in the end for our kitchen, one of the endurance ones I think that was suitable for high moisture areas.

We got our kitchen painted with the valpar premium paint and been very impressed.

Our lounge is being painted next week and will be going for it again, the paint colour we want is from next and the colour scan in b&q works fantastic.

I recently used Johnstones in my kitchen; covaplus vinyl matt on walls and ceiling paint for... ceiling. Covaplus is great but seriously avoid the ceiling paint, absolutely appalling coverage. It’s advertised as one coat but it is THE most difficult paint I’ve ever had to work with, and that’s after doing full house renovation on my first place and completed every room in my 4 bed house. I’d stick to Dulux trade matt for the ceiling if you’re going for white. I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to decoration but simply had to give up with that ceiling paint, if it wasn't for me being on a deadline to have it finished I would have bought something else but it was a huge room and just looks so patchy - something I've never ever had a problem with.

I couldn’t recommend more the Farrow and Ball estate eggshell for skirtings. It is the second room I have used this on as miles better than satinwood or gloss IMO. At some point I will be just going around every room and redoing with eggshell. Best coverage of any paint was on a utility room unit (Farrow and Ball) but at around £60 for a 5L tin it isn't cheap but I can almost see double the coverage from what I had with Dulux Trade.

Also I would highly recommend using pole with roller - saves a huge amount of time and effort.

Having our lounge painted as I type. Went with the Valpar Premium again, colour matched with the Dove Feather paint from next.

Will post pics of room later once the decorator has left.

Painted my bathroom ceiling with Zinsser perma white, undercoat was bullseye123, looks really good - hides all the imperfections of which there were many.

Walls were also done with tinted permawhite.

so far no mould or anything which considering I am still waiting for my extractor fan to be hooked up (2 months later) is good.

I've just done my sash windows with it too, so after a winters condensation I'll see how it holds up.

Ive used Dulux Trade Super Mat on my kitchen diner and the finish was fantastic but it took a lot to get a good coverage so probably wouldn't use it again! The decorator who did my new house used Johnson Covaplus and it looks great although he is an excellent decorator to be fair!

I highly recommend Leyland trade white for the ceilings and Laura Ashley for the walls.
The trick i've found to getting a great finish for the ceiling is to water the paint down slightly. I'll add maybe 1-2 pints of water to a 10L tub. It'll take 2 coats minimum, 4 coats on freshly plastered.
