Have been using PSP 7 at work now for a few weeks to help me with a poster I've got to do for some uni work and was wondering it its possible to create a fade out from a set line drawn around an object ...

I'm working with an aerial photo of the wembley area and want to fade out to white anything outside the ward boundary + stadium areas ...

This must be possible so I'd be very appreciative if someone could quickly offer any advice :)

- posting the photo up isn't a good idea as it's a huge file in case you wonder why its not here!

You mean something like this?

Open up the image you would like to use:
1.jpg

Then open up a new image bigger than the photo you want to use, make it all white. (This is to make sure when you do the faded effect, the edge of the photo is in fact 100% white.)

Then copy and paste your photo onto this white background:

Choose the selection tool, and use the circular mode from the drop down menu, change the feather selection according to how harsh you want the faded effect to be. (High number = large faded area, Low number = very harsh sudden faded area)

Then select the area you want to keep normal:

Then press SHIFT + CTRL + I to invert the selection (will select everything outside of the part of the photo you want to keep.)

After the selection is inverted select the paintbrush tool
Size: 999 (To ensure the whole image is covered)
Hardness: 100
Step: 32
Density, Thickness and Opacity: 100

Then click once in the middle of photo using the paintbrush tool, it should look like this:

Then crop to fit:

OtherOption - No problem ;)

Bruce - Sorry its taken me along time to reply, i was banned from the forums for a few days

I'm actually using the 30day trail at the moment, trying to decide if it was worth the upgrade myself. And already after using it for 10 days, i can yes it is. This program is excellent. I noticed a huge performance difference in corel, when editing large photos, the changes are loading a lot faster than in PSP 7/8. The software is aimed much more at photographers, they have slightly changed the order to menus and options, but for the better. Image and Adjust are now before Effects, which makes sense to me, and also some of the options that were in sub menus, have been moved to the main menu, making them accessible faster. Corel have obviously listened to a lot of customers for the of making this. There is also some new features like an aperture manipulation tool to change the depth of field of photos, and High pass sharpening, which can give some very nice effects. There is a lot more that i hadn't seen before, but this might of been because they were hidden away in submenus in older versions of PSP. (Fill Flash, Backlighting, Skin Smoothing)

I was hesitant at first about a different design layout, but i can safely say the changes they made have helped, and not confused. In my opinion its worth upgrading just for the performance increase (I also heard theres a dualcore patch coming out soon, which will increase performance even more so.)

CS2 seems to be more than a fashion accessory than image editing software, which is a shame because PSP is just as good, if not a better piece of software. I often get photoshop users asking me how i did something in PSP, and how they can recreate something similar in PS. And thats the problem, people spend 500 odd quid on a piece of software to sharpen images, simply because they can't figure out how to do anything else. If you want the technology of photoshop, but want something easy and clear to use, go for corel XI and save yourself £450 ;)

Thanks for that, will definitely look into upgrading.

Does it still have the same options as previous versions, such as normal image creation, rather than just photo editing? I would assume so but with the name Im not sure if its just geared towards image manipulation these days.

I agree on the PS thing, for 99% of the things you want to do PSP is more than adequate.

I will probably wait until the dual core patch is out, as thats the main reason I want to upgrade.

No, its still a full blown graphics/image editing program, its just more focused on photography this time around. Its got all the same functions as psp7/8/9.

Happy scrolling :D
