Lot's of conflicting opinions on painting new sand and cement render i.e whether to prime it or not? Some say a mist coat is sufficient followed by 2 coats of good masonry paint, others say apply a stabilizing solution. My preference is to brush down with a soft brush to remove any loose material and then the mist coat method. Has anyone done this and what method and results did you get?

I gave it a brush down and then just went in with the exterior masonary paint, I did three coats (only a small wall) and it has been fine for over 3 years.

You would think there'd be a definitive guide but even amongst tradesmen opinions are mixed. I think I'll just go with my original method of a mist coat and 2 further coats if coverage is good. :)

Depends on the quality and age of the render. If the surface is a bit dodgy then stabilizing solution, if not then mist coat. If you are in doubt then the stabilizing solution. Certainly won't do any harm.

The renders only been on a couple of weeks so I think the mist coat will suffice, that's what I've decided to do. :)
