This. And as with any painting, preparation is key! Make sure you clean / sand / degrease the surface before hand. Depending on expectations and usage I had Hammerite silver / black look pretty good even after years.
VHT from a can will look better, but if it's warm enough and you're careful even brushing it from a can can work very well.

I painted the hub bit of my rear discs with silver Hammerite (standard Hammerite) when I replaced them, and they still look good now 4 years later.
So, when I replaced the front discs I did the same, but after 4 laps of the Nurburgring Nordschleife the paint was blistered.
From memory standard Hammerite is good for up to 120c but Hammerite barbeque paint is good for up to 600c.
I've bought one of those caliper paint kits in silver for the calipers which contains VHT paint, so if there is enough paint left over I'll sand down the front discs and redo them.
As a side note, I'm not trying to show off my single pot standard calipers, I just don't like the way they look when they go rusty!

You can paint the tophat but not the brake surface.
If you paint the surface then your pads are gonna get glazed in paint and not be very effective.
The odd bit of over-spray will be fine as that will burn off.

yeah it's a good idea to paint the top hat bit of the disc, it'll keep looking smart for ages that way, it's ok to get some overspray on the contact surface of the disc as that'll rub off really quickly when you use the brakes.
I'd try and not get any on the mating surface to the hub or to the wheel unless you can make sure it's totally uniform as you don't want to introduce any in-balance.

I just fitted a set of new discs and they were already painted everywhere except the braking surface and the mating surface to the hub
Actually that's a big fat lie - I ordered a pair of discs, from the same manufacturer, and one was painted but the other wasn't. Great QC there then
