Painting UPVC windows!

I’ve seen companies that come out and do it. They mask it all off and use a paint gun to spray it. Looks good.

Not sure it’s gonna be as decent looking DIY

I did ours, it wasn’t bad and certainly made them better than they were. But I did end up replacing them eventually anyway

I've read Zinsser 1-2-3 primer and Zinsser All coat is the way to go?

Was thinking of replacing but with 7 windows 2 doors and french doors it's not going to be cheap.

Did you spray them or use a brush, I guess it all depends on budget and how you value your time I guess, if the frames are in good condition with no blown windows I guess if cheap enough it could be worth while, if some frames are poor condition and you have to replace some panes then it may just be easier to replace them with the colour you want.

Cost is a major factor in the choice here, we had ours replaced about 17-20 years ago with brown frames & doors and the only things we've done since then is replace a few blown panes and the front and back doors I've had replaced with composite but when we had them done it was only about £2.5k then (7 windows and 2 doors), I bet they're a lot more expensive now aren't they?

I’ve used both paint that I brushed on and spray paint that came in 500ml cans.

The spray paint was a much better finish but was slightly more expensive. The key was cleaning very well and a very quick/light sand. I’ll try and dig out some photos

That would be great. Spray will always be a better finish but couldn't be doing with the prep.
Are most of these paints Matt finish?

Anthracite 7016 spreads worse than Japanese knotweed :D
I was only thinking this yesterday when out on my run looking at all the houses. Looks ok on 50% of houses and terrible on 50%. I wonder if it one of these things that everyone will want to get rid of in 15 years. I Put dark blue kitchen units, Media Walls, Herring bone floors, and that shadow gap wood panelling stuff, in the same category as that.

Haha I best get saving then. My house has all that :p

It's 'doable' but it'll be a shed ton of messy work and will probably make you cry. It also won't last if you don't get the process and materials right. There are decorating companies who will come round, mask and spray them with some hardcore paint, much cheaper than replacing them and you save yourself from a screaming nervous breakdown!

When they're done professionally it looks really good but if you're going to DIY it you need to go hard on the prep and how you're doing it, no messing around with brushes you need to spray it or don't bother as it'll just look pants otherwise.

It's really not the type of job you can half-arse as it'll be really obvious

Can't they just be wrapped like a car, don't like it peel it off?

You can buy special hard coat finish paint for it but it's expensive

IF your painting them you might wanna replace any worn hinges at the same time, like if one of the windows isn't closing properly on the corners where the hinges are

The key is the paint. Personally, I use a good primer then an ordinary water based exterior paint.

Zinsser Bin 123 Primer is fantastic. You can get "Deep Tint" for darker top-coats.
