Palit

I must admit, I dont understand some peoples posts, inform the OP of his options by all means, but some people seem to take it personally if the OP doesnt go with their suggestion, like theyre intent on convincing OP to change their mind, I had this on a thread of mine recently, I clearly stated in OP that Ive had ATi card 4 times in row and wanted to try NV, I dont care about best deal or price/performance I just want what I want and still people try to talk me into buying ATi, whats it matter to anyone else? In my instance I was asking if there were any more custom 570s due soon, as no one seemed to know they all tried to convince me to get ATi instead, in this instance its been pointed out to OP the relative performance of 570 to 6950/6970 and he has explained his reasons for wanting 570 still (his main game being Dirt) and still people are trying to talk him out of it, I guess its some form of purchase justification, if you can make everyone buy the same as you you feel better about your own purchase???
/end rant
To OP, another option for you to look at would be the Gigabyte 560SOC, cheaper than a 570 with very similar performance (not sure about exact performance in Dirt, you may want to check) and Gigabyte do have UK RMA, obv the 570 could be clocked too but out the box performance theyre similar

I had a Palit 7900GS, was an excellent card - massively overclockable. I beleive they are something to do with Gainward. My GS was exactly the same as the equivalent Gainward card, same HS design and everything

Fox has expressed no desire to solely look at Nvidia cards.

He gave his reasoning, and I provided him with a counter view. The fact of the matter is, the cards are very evenly matched and the difference between 77 and 90FPS I think it was, is not going to be distinguishable in game.

Both Fox and I have been following a very similar upgrade path, (just look at his sig vs. mine), I've done my research and come to my own conclusion, something I think most people in the same situation would appreciate hearing rather than condemn.

I need no purchase justification, and I'm not a fanboy (I even stated, I'd have bought a 570 if they were priced better!), but I/We are providing objective views to aid Fox in his decision.

If you have a chip on your shoulder from your thread, I suggest you keep it there.

My first palit was gtx260, and it squealed so loud (louder than my other gtx260/gtx280) on load, rma'd in couple days and never looked at this brand again (maybe was just unlucky), but I agree that brands don't have much difference between each-other, some just have better customer service.

Mike it wasnt necessarily directed at you (if it was Id of said), it was a general observation, so whos the one with the chip?

You were complaining about people trying to 'sell' the 6950 to the OP, despite him asking for just that.

[TW]Fox said:
As ever though if you can demonstrate that a 6970 performing 6950 is clearly the better choice, then I'll have no reason to buy the 570.

I have been the main person on that side of the fence in this thread - your comments were most certainly aimed at me.

I agree with Mike that there is no point on buying the 570 whilst a 6950 can be bought for about £60-£70 less and be unlocked and overclocked to 6970 levels and above that.

Woah!. Easy tiger.

The OP is in the process or already has sent back a GTX 480 for the noise. So when discussing about what is going to be acceptable if the 6950 to 6970/6970 is quieter than the GTX 570 and will get about the same performance then what would you advise in that scenario?. You seemed to have dragged how people made YOU feel into THIS thread which is really not needed to be honest and quite selfish. TW Fox is a decent member here and would say if he felt this way. He is asking advice and because the cards are pretty evenly matched it's not so clear cut.

If you want to have a rant about this be respectful and create a thread rather than bringing an argument to a discussion.

Not going to argue with you mate, it wasnt aimed at you, it was a general observation about not just this thread but all (this thread was merely latest example), maybe I should have made that clearer, I apologise if I offended you, but I stand by my first post in that often some people (not necessarily you) do not actually listen to what the OP is asking for and go ahead and recommend seemingly what they want as opposed to what the OP wants, and I speculated the reason being some form of purchase justification, obv sometimes it is peoples genuine mistake of misreading what OP is after, and I may of misread OPs posts too, just to me it seemed he was after an NV and was asking about a particular brand and RMAs etc, Im not going to start debating this, hope the OP finds what he's after

Edit: JD I did not mean to turn this into an argument, and I apologise to you (I should have been more careful with how I phrased my post maybe) and the OP too, I did not mean to derail his thread, I wont explain anymore as it will merely continue with detracting from what the OP is after, apologies and back on track

With a 6950 in my sig it kind of makes anyone responding to this feel it was partly aimed at them so I was just explaining that it's not a matter of PJS for everyone but I can only speak for myself. I'm actually thinking of selling my card and getting a GTX 570 but this is not down to performance or noise as they are pretty even there, it's mainly as I'd see my full resolution of 1920x1440 with Nvidia compared to the 1600x1200 I get with AMD. Must be driver related (CRT gaming Viewsonic).

Yes some people will advise due to what they know rather than look at the big picture but not everyone does that. I want [TW]Fox to get the best card for what he needs and I couldn't care less if it's AMD or NVidia as I like both equally.

I apologise also for taking it personally. I'm just not wanting to have any part of the red vs green side of things and would like to be known as unbiased when advising or discussing.

Everything is hunky dory again so can we group hug and lets get back to manipulating erm, I mean helping [TW]Fox make his choice?. S'all good in the hood. :)

My Palit 9800GTX+ can no longer do stock clocks, though I believe that's to do with bumpgate than the quality of Palit. Hence all those underclocked green edition GTS250s and 9800GTs.

Gainward is Palit's premium brand, better coolers etc...

Good as anyone, just reference design.

Maybe the first batches are reference but the majority of their cards are non-reference.

10db quieter for the 6970 over the GTX 480.

6dc quieter for the GTX 570 over the GTX 480.

If that GTX 480 is like RavenXXX's then your GTX 480 will be more audible.

So, what I'd do if money is rather saved than spent would be to get the 6950, unlock it and clock it. If you don't mind the extra outlay for the GTX 570 then go for that due to your game preference of Dirt 2. There is only 3.3db difference between the GTX 570 and 6970. Personally I think my fan is audible at 50%. Any higher and it's headset time. Until I get my hands on a GTX 570 to hear what it sounds like it's hard to advise here :(. That's why I'm relying on Anandtech at the moment for comparison because of the noise levels you heard with the GTX 480.

Ins't your reference res 2048 x 1536?

Fox... sorry to chuck something else into the mix to make it harder to choose!

I skimmed an article at Toms yesterday I don't know if that has any bearing on things for you if you're comparing Nvidia vs ATI.

Ins't your reference res 2048 x 1536?

http://www.viewsoniceurope.com/uk/products/archive/g90fb324562.htm

The G90f+B is that res. I can't find the G90f+ on Viewsonic but the only reference I can find is this link below to show 1920x1440 as max resolution.

http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews11283.html

On XP this works fine, I skipped Vista and now it doesn't show with AMD drivers apart from 1600x1200, with the 9800GTX I tested for a friend 10 weeks ago 1920x1440 was available and that's why I'm thinking about the GTX 570. I'm perfectly happy with the performance of the 6950 unlocked. I just want my resolutions back on my ancient screen :D.

The reason I advised the 6950 unlocked to Fox was the noise levels. Also if money was best saved than spent. For the performance difference then the 6950 is a great buy. If he wouldn't mind spending the extra then I'd recommend the GTX 570 due to Dirt 2 performances and the noise levels are just slightly higher than the 6970 so at least both cards are not as noisy as the GTX 480.

Palit are like the Alba brand of graphics cards. Yes some of the hardware is there and functioning but its not good.

See the GT 460 VRM sinks issue.

they are a reference board but with cuts in quality in terms of the cooling/hardware.

Spend the extra £10 and buy an Asus, MSi, or something.

Drivers, BSOD, compatability. thats why id take the hit and go nvidia. I had a 5830 and ditched it for a 460 and i couldnt be happier as my system is rock stable now. With ATi i recieved driver crashes as did numerous other people.

If its a reference board fitted with a reference cooler how can it be anything different?

Hmmm, not good. Is this really what ATi is still like?
