Hey,

I really really like the new Pixi Plus - very slim, full qwerty keyboard, shouldn't be too pricey, and runs WebOS which is highly rated.

Palm Pixi Plus

I'm thinking about getting this at the beginning of July (if I can get a good deal on O2), but I really wanted an Android based phone :( I know WebOS can still sync with Google contacts etc, but I guess features like the Palm appstore are lacking!

So I guess I'm asking you guys, a) should I take a gamble on the Pixi, or b) are there any similar phones (thin, qwerty, unique, cheap-ish) that run Android. And maybe c) is it possible to hack Android onto Palm phones?! :p

Cheers,

Su

Does it really have to be thin? The Milestone is a great Android option with a decent hardware keyboard but it's a slider :(

Do you really need a hardware keyboard? It cripples your market a bit :p

Yup, definitely need a hardware keyboard - touchscreen is ace for browsing and navigation, but I need something tactile to type on!

Milestone is at the top of my list, but at ~£350 it's pretty pricey... I'm guessing the Pixi will weigh in at £200-250 as an in-contract upgrade with O2. Also I get the impression that Droid 2 (Nexus 2?!) is not too far off, so I wouldn't want to drop the best part of 400 notes on a Milestone now!

Cheers,

Su

There is a keyboard slide version of the Desire due out soon.

Might be worth waiting for that in a month or so. I'm not at home at the minute but I'll have a dig around when I'm back.

Maybe I can scratch off the Pixi logo and just write MANPHONE in permanent marker? :p

You'd have to do something like that :D

Personally, if you don't want a Milestone, try and wait for this -

The HTC Vision

I'm not sure of your phone history or how much you like phones and what you use it for exactly, but I'd urge you to ignore the gay phone and get a Milestone at the very least, or wait for the Droid/Milestone 2.

Maybe go and try a touch screen keyboard, you might even like it :p

I can tell you now for a fact, the Vision will blow away the competition with regards to hardware keyboards, unless the Milestone/Droid 2 is ramped up a huge amount.

The Nokia N900 is well worth a mention, but it's not WebOS or Android, but it's great to type on. (I have one as a spare :p)

Droid 2 is rumoured to be the Nexus 2 also... so I would be suprised if Google won't have the top phone specs wise as their brand.

lol that's an awful photochop Robbo :p keyboard looks great, but it does seem very FAT, even for a chop!

Nexus 2 / Droid 2 would be perfect, especially if they sort the battery life. But I suspect release would be towards the end of the year, if not 2011. Also it will probably cost a metric **** tonne of ££.

I dunno how much longer I can suffer with this Blackberry Pearl :p

Well, it's the only image around of it at the moment so it'll have to do :p

I think you'll probably be waiting a while for the Droid2 so it's not a reasonable option if you want a phone quite soon.

Does it being fat bother you that much? First thing my uncle does when I show him a new phone, puts it in his pocket, and walks around for about 2 minutes to see how much he can "feel it" in his trouser pocket, I mean really! :D

Gotta tell you, was in a shop trying out various phones with keyboards, and the Milestone was by far the worst - tiny keys and they have absolutely NO TRAVEL! It's pretty much like typing on a touchscreen.

N900 was marginally better, Pre was better still, Blackberry keyboards were the best.

(no judgement on any of the phones overall, just how much I liked their keyboards)

You have to look at it this way, we saw the Passion and Bravo leak about 3-4 months before they released as the Nexus and Desire respectively. So at best you'd be looking at a September launch for the rumoured Nexus Two or HTC Vision. And as for the Droid 2 something going by the codename Motorola Shadow has appeared this week, but that's CDMA, has no physical keyboard and is due to hit VZW, so is completely useless to you if that does turn out to be the Droid 2

You could wait to see if T-Mob UK follows T-Mob USA in launching a MyTouch 3G Slide here (Full qwerty keyboard), or perhaps look at the Dell Streak (Launching 4th June on O2), which has a screen so big it doesn't matter how fat your fingers are :p

Yup, I do that too *embarrassed*. Although your pocket is where your phone stays for 90% of the day anyway, so it is a big deal!

Yeah I tried the Milestone out in CPWH, and the keys were pretty small and not particularly tactile, but still better than poking a bit of solid glass!! :p

The Palm Pre and Pixi both have solid keyboards supposedly which is a major plus point imo. I do like my Blackberry keys, but I really don't want something as clinical as Blackberry OS on my personal phone any more... :(

My fingers are very dainty, thank you very much :p I just don't like touchscreens!!

I've used WebOs briefly, and I was impressed. However, I more impressed with the elasticity(?) of android, I loaded the x86 live cd of android of my uncles eeePc, and everything worked. even youtube. To be fair, I don't know what kind of hardware accelerationg (if any) was going on.

I just realised I didn't have much to add. Sorry!

I really like the look of the Pixi, just wish it had the internals of the Pre (and a slightly larger screen). I ended up going for a Desire but the form factor of something like the Pixi still attract me.

WebOS is great as well from what I have used of it Could do with more developers but there is some real quality in the app store (at least in the US.... have they opened up the EU market properly now?)
