Just got my GT50 at the weekend, wow, absolutely love it.

However as I scan the internet discussions on it there are a few settings options that I just can't find. People mention pulldowns of 3:2 or 4:4, what are these are why can't I see any settings relating to pulldown? Same applies with people discussing 48hz vs 60hz, I can't see any settings?

I was also looking for the 24p smoothing option but I think that only appears if you have 24p content being shown? is that correct? What content is 24p?

Oh and whilst I'm on, if my HTPC is connected directly it shows a 60hz input, but if I connect it via my Onkyo HTX it shows a 50hz input. Is the Onkyo strangling me in any way?

I'm struggling to get a grip with all of this and what it means so any helpful advice/links would be appreciated

No offense but the whole 24p/60hz thing is just pure garbage, championed by the same people that think spending £100 on a hdmi cable is neccessary.

24p is all about panning and stuff but really it makes very little difference.
Onkyo is 50hz bc its a euro machine, america has 60hz - dont think higher is better. 50hz holds a little bit more detail.

Panny tvs only enables settings when you have the correct device that uses it connected which is probs why you cant see anything.

Haha, yeh I can't stand the £100 cable idiots.

The reason for my concern though is that I'm getting what i would call micro stuttering on panning shots (like you say) when watching films through XBMC on my HTPC. I'm sure this is something to do with the 50hz/24fps battle going on and once I can understand what is happening I can amend the XBMC/HTPC/TV settings to deal with things smoothly.

It's one of those issues where once you notice it, you can't stop looking for it!

no that's more to do with your htpc and the video settings, not your tv.
You need to look into your video card and XMBC settings.
Check your resolution settings to see if 24hz is there (should be if supported)

please be aware that even if it is the stutter might not totally disapppear - thats why 120hz tvs were invented, but then kiss goodbye to detail with those! (kinda the complete opposite reason to owning a plasma.)

Are these TVs really as good as they sound?
I'm set on the Samsung F8000 at the moment, and frankly I can't see how anything could be better than that! It's a stunning display.

But the 46" is 1900 or so, compared to 800 for the 50" GT50.

GT50s are only so cheap because the GT60 came out about 6 weeks ago. They're pretty much half price at the moment.

With regard to the micro stutter thing, the Intelligent Frame Creation setting does made some difference. Sometimes it makes it better, sometimes worse. It's much less of a problem the GT series than it is on the ST.

Also yes, the TV changes between 50hz and 60hz depending on the input. My Apple TV comes on at 60Hz. Some text appears top left saying 60Hz 1080p.

I really need to see a GT50 in action properly, but the likes of Currys etc never seem to have many plasmas in.

John Lewis, forget curry's, in fact anybody who doesn't buy from john lewis is either ignorant or not very well researched.

John Lewis offer probably the best customer service out there.

They also offer a free 5 year guarantee regardless of the tv bought.

They also offer a price match service.

People recently got the GT50 50" for £720 from john lewis because bennets had it for that price, your too late now.

Also say your tv breaks down in 4 years time, and you pay to upgrade our set rather than opt for their on of their replacement's offered, they class it as buying a new set and you get another 5 year guarantee on the new set.

Also in regards to the OP's queries, av forums has all the info you need on how to set up your tv.

IFC should be set to minimum or off.

So long as you use a decent input you shouldn't really have any problems. I use a PS3, PC and the built in freeview tuner, never had any issues.

Here is some info I got from avforums:

If you don't plan on properly calibrating the best preset to use would be an out of box pro 1. With the orbiter on and PNR off, image frame creation min.

If you want it brighter use cinema with colour set to warm. Or normal set to warm.

Orch, what content are you playing through your HTPC? I hardly use mine since setting up my GT50. The built in media player happily connects to my NAS has 5GHz wifi (only just started testing that as was hard wired before) and plays everything I have thrown at it so far.

The only slight downside is the ff/rw which is a little flaky but manageable.

I wouldn't normally buy from Currys, but I just wanted to see it.

And is the VT50 not worth the extra over the GT50?

what price can you get the VT50 for?

it only has 2 differences from a GT50 the filter and something else which is either contrast or refresh rate iirc.

imo if you can get it for 10% more £900 or less then it is worth it for the 50". any more then i wouldn't pay it, the difference those 2 things make is most likely around 5% max to the picture quality.

check out the avforums review of both sets.

Ok thanks.

And it still kicks the ass of the Samsung F series? ;)

it's the best bang for buck tv you can buy this year

http://www.avforums.com/reviews/Pan...-50-Inch-Full-HD-3D-Plasma-TV_287/Review.html

last year it was the 51" Samsung D8000

imo buying a year old model is always the best way to buy a tv, you get it for rock bottom pricing, meaning more for your money.

"LED's" are so overpriced in comparison it is hilarious, you could buy 3 GT50's for the equivalent LED backlit LCD

If you were happy to spend that kind of money on a Samsung, why not step up to the new Panasonic GT60/VT65

Not saying it's really worth it and you might be better off spending money upgrading the rest of your kit, just thought it was strange you didn't mention them

FWIW the Bennetts deal is still on and JL are price matching it. It has been extended until the 20th.

As the lady on the phone told me that they had got 62 TV's left of the GT50 (and a few hundred in their mail box of peoples requests to price match) I bought one online for £799 and then used their online application to get them to refund the £80 from the Bennetts deal.

By doing that at least gets me the TV - which comes on Friday.
I have bought a couple of 3D glasses from ebay for £40.
