Right, **** it.
I've had enough.

As anyone who has read my previous threads know I took a punt on a Xonar DG. The headset I use with it are Zalman 5.1 analogues. They are not very great tbh.
The dG sounds terrible with 5.1 so I used the BB Uni drivers and they cause my games to have a microlag in mouse movement. It's not much and your average Joe wouldn't probably mind, but I do. It's the difference between life and death in BF3 ;o)

So I've been using the XDG in normal stereo.
Now I've deiced to dump the Zalmans, keep the DG and buy a semi decent (but cheap) pair of cans.

So that brings me to the Panasonic RP-HTF600E-S. I've read a few reviews about them and they get a glowing reception. Many folks (in other forums) I've heard mention (aka I read) they're nearer quality of the £100 bracket.

But alas being a bit thick and stupid in regard to PC audio these days I'm totally in the dark with regard to these for gaming.
Will they do the Dolby GX thing the DG offers ? Will they give me simulated surround and if so I presume they do so well ?

I'm at my wits end with this whole debacle since deciding to abandon on board audio.
If the Panasonic RP-HTF600E-S's are not reccomended then what are with a top budget of £40 (I'm skint like).
Ta much guys.

This is what I have in my Xonar centre when playing BF3 using Asus drivers, it sounds fine to me.

Audio channels= 8
Analogue out= headphone
5.1 Virtual Speaker Shifter= ticked
HP advanced setting = depends on HP's
Dolby headphone= ticked and set to DH1 or DH2/DH3 if you prefer
Effect Equalizer is set on Bass

That's about it, those Panny headphones are fine, no need to change them

Hope this helps.

It's Zalman 5.1's I have Pooley, I'm thinking of swapping them (despite only having bought them over a week ago) for the pannies ;o)

Thanks for the info btw.

Oh in that case I would go for the Pannies.

Using stereo headphones with Dolby headphone is very good for gaming imo.

I think the Panasonic's are the best bet for up to £40. They work very well with Dolby Headphone, which I assume you are referring to, as pooley said.

I've got a pair of Goldring DR150's, which are also about £30, and are also great for use with DH. I couldn't really recommend them over the HTF600's though, as the headband is prone to cracking. For £30, they are superb value, but then, so are the HTF600's, but minus the headband issue.

How well Dolby Headphone works for you, is impossible to judge. Sound is a such a personal thing, that what one person will love, someone else will hate.

There have been no end of threads debating "virtual/simulated surround sound" vs "multi driver headsets" or "true 5.1" as some like to call it. I'm not a fan of multi driver headsets, but they work for some people, and I suppose that's all that matters at the end of the day.

I think the majority of people prefer stereo + Dolby Headphone, etc, but it's not for everyone it seems. While there are many people who find "true 5.1" headsets "ghastly" in comparison to a decent pair of stereo headphones + DH, or Creative's equivalent CMSS 3D. There are people who find "simulated" just isn't as good, when compared to so called "true 5.1" headsets.

I've seen a few threads where people who thought "simulated" was poor, and found something like the Roccat Kave's to be great, they didn't really give "simulated" a fair chance by using a rubbish headset. "Simulated" will only work as well as the headphones or headset being used.

I think when using a decent pair of headphones that work well with DH, or CMSS 3D, a lot of people can see, or hear I should say, the flaws that multi driver headsets have.

Multi driver headsets are flawed, but it is understandable why some people like them, because when "simulated" doesn't work for someone, "true 5.1" headsets are going to seem great in comparison.

Yup.

I think the quality of sound is depreciative with these 5.1's tbh switching to these pannies will at least have a bit of ooomph again.
Thanks guys appreciate the answerers. Going to order the Pannies.

I am currently gaming with some Panasonic RP-HTF600E-S, a Xonar DG and a Speedlink SPES Clip on mic.

Works fantastically in my humble opinion.

*** No competitor price talk ***
Bargain.

My wife is going to go ape **** after me buying this sounds card, the Zalmans (not now to be used) and now these Pannies. I'm planning on getting a bargain priced 560ti when they drop a bit in price too(hopefully end of this month or next).

Way I see it, she smokes I don't, I don;t waste my money on ciggies, only cheap crappy 5.1 headsets :D

With the costs of cigarettes, you've got every right to splurge some dough on nice goodies! :D

Nice headphones will last a hell of a lot longer than a few packs of cigarettes, and are a damn sight better for your health! :p

Got the phones yesterday and currently in the process of the ' burn in'.
If this is them before they season I can't bloomin wait.
I'm no audiophile but these give me so much more clarity on my music and well clear in game.
Bass is immense!

Mostly playing BF3 and as it has its own simulated surround thing going on that is in my opinion a bit pants I've only tested one game in Dolby. That game being CoD4 MW. Bung the Dolby on, selected 5.1 speakers in game and WOW! It really sounded like surround sound (xonar dg).

Thanks to the guys on these forums for pointing me towards these, I love them !

2020 Sound System blasting right now...I could get up and dance! :P

Thx again.

I really want a pair of these..... :s

£400 on a new roof for my car has just put the purchase back a few months.....

On the plus side, the MX5 now looks like new again ;)

Just recieved my Panasonic RP-HTF600E-S today, for £30 you cannot go wrong - considering my previous Sennheiser HD595 cost £120, the Panosonic sound just as good to me, alittle more bass and the sound stage is slightly less.

I have taken off the leather type pads and replaced mine with some Velour Pads off some very old crap Creative HS-600 headphones I got free with a soundcard years ago, now they dont get hot and tacky after a few hours.

All in all very happy, well worth the £30. :)

We should start an appreciation thread about these. :)

I have had my pair for around 2 weeks, and i an very happy with them.
Fit my head very well, and the sound is excellent, just need to get my Xonar Dg driver issue fixed now.

also what settings are people using for these?
Do you set these as 2 channel?
i have set the ohms to the middle one iirc its the pro gaming mode upto 64 ohms.
Do i set these up for 'Dolby Headphone' as well?
also have it set to medium envoirement with the bass turned up in the EQ.
any other settings that are used/good?

Just got a pair of these.

I've only used them for 30 minutes but I really really hope they improve a lot from my 1st impression. They seem VERY muddy at the moment. No clarity at all.

According to a fair amount of people, they do improve with use, or you could say, burn in. I've seen a few people say they were not impressed at first, but found they got a lot better the more time they were given.

I will give them a bit more time but at the moment I'm not impressed.

For instance, at the start of Carnival by The Cardigans. The song starts with a box of matches rattling and a match being struck. With my previous JVC RX700's it sounded like someone was literally standing next to me striking the match. With these Panasonic's there's just no clarity to it. I've noticed the muddy sound with instruments like cymbals and tambourines as well.

Vocals seem to lack clarity as well. Instead they sound more 'warm' than anything.

Just ordered a pair. I really prefer velour to pleather but I am not sure I can bring myself to buy the Beyer replacements. Just seems wrong to spend £20 - £25 on some pads for £30 headphones.

8 days later and my pair still haven't improved.

I have to use my music player equalizer to get any sort of detailed sound out of them. For me, they're not as good as my old JVC RX700's. They're just nowhere near as 'involving' or enjoyable to use.
