I'm looking at changing the tv at some point this month/next month, it has to be a 42" as the tv unit wont take a 50" tv :( and I'm looking to spend no more than about £1k.

I was originally looking at the Panasonic TX-P42ST60B, but am I right in thinking that the Panasonic TX-P42GT60B is the tv of choice at this price point?

The tv is going in a fairly bright room, but any serious movie watching will be done during the evening and a black out blind will be down to cut out any light. Daytime viewing will be mostly sky tv and some HD channels.

Is there anything else I should be looking at all?

one of the major advantages the GT60 has over the ST60 is inputt lagg, if that isn't an issue then get the ST60.

also tv's are a lot lighter these day's of past, therefore i would look at not the size of tv the stand can accommodate but the weight of the tv.

e.g. my new 50" is lighter than my old 42".

therefore i would get the 50" ST60, unless you plan on gaming the get the GT60.

The weight of the tv isnt the issue with the current stand, its the gap the tv has to fit in. Its only 1400mm wide by 690mm high, otherwise I would be looking at the 50".

I will be doing some gaming via my Xbox 360 (Xbox One when I get one) and the kids will be using the Wii on it as well.

Also in terms of picture quality it seems to be worth spending the extra £200 or so to buy the GT60 instead of the ST60. The trouble I have is finding somewhere local that has both tv's so I can try and compare them side by side so to speak. But I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong though :)

panasonic store will be the only place most likely, because john lewis aren't stocking the ST range.

tbh all you need to do is look at the avforum reviews to judge PQ.

the ST is not that far off the GT, the only reason to get the GT tbh is due to input lagg being a lot better. i usually only buy from John Lewis, so that would be another reason for getting the GT and just using their price match service.

Order placed for the Panasonic TX-P42GT60B TV (£974.95), Panasonic DMP-BDT330 BluRay Player(£179.95) and 2x Panasonic TY-ER3D4ME Active 3D Glasses (£39.95).

Should be hopefully picking this lot up next weekend, can't wait :)

Wow I would have bought a ps3 instead to play blu rays for cheaper

I thought about getting a PS3, but the simple fact of the matter is I didn't want a PS3...especially not with the next generation of consoles around the corner, and it would only have saved me £30/£40 or so. Plus the other half isn't exactly technology savvy shall we say, so the solution had to be as simple as possible to use as well.

so what if new consoles are around the corner you were going to be using it for blu-rays, the ps3 can also be used as a media player, games machine, etc, etc for cheaper, it would also retain it's value better than say a blu ray player, so you could even sell it when the ps4 came out and buy that and not lose as much money.

the best thing about the ps3 is regular firmware updates which sometimes make updates to the HDMI capabilities or blu ray capabilities, etc.

basically it's a brilliant blu ray player which auto updates, also it's not hard to use, put a blu ray disc in the slot and it should auto-play. if a 10 year old can do it, im pretty sure you can teach your mrs.

also on another note:

Why did you go for those glasses?

the 3D3 ones are the same price iirc, and a lot better.

A1121 - stylish silver ones @ £37.49 each

A1112 - plain black ones @ £37.49 each

A1111 - these are IR compatible as well (plain black) @ £47.49 each

prices are for when buying 2, buying a single unit is rounded up to 9.99.

otherwise you could have even bought cheaper ones off ebay if you just wanted some glasses which work.

or even the Samsung ones which cost £14.99 each or less also work with the tv.

basically for similar money you could have gotten better ones, or you could have saved yourself a lot of money if you wanted similar ones by buying a different make.

Thanks for the feedback Psycho Sonny, very helpful and informative as always :)

In terms of the PS3 option as a dedicated BluRay player, I did toy with the idea of getting one but for the following reasons I went with a dedicated BluRay player instead:

1. I already have a PC running XBMC, so all my media player needs are sorted.
2. I liked the idea of only having to use one remote to control the tv and bluray player, or alternatively we can use the Panasonic app on our Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.0 tablet.
3. I have no intention of gaming on the PS3, the stepdaughter has one upstairs in her room and I have a Xbox 360 downstairs. Besides, I have a more than capable PC to game on anyway (see sig).
4. The DMP-BDT330 will be connected to the internet via CAT5 cabling, so this should be firmware upgradable as well.

I wasn't aware of the 3D3 glasses at the time of placing the order, and having had a quick look around online I can't find any reviews that make a strong enough case for choosing them over the Panasonic ones.

The 3D3 A1111 (at £48 each) would work out at nearly £20 more expensive for the pair and the 3D3 A1112 are a similar price to the Panasonic ones at £38.00 each. In hindsight, and with the backing off some good solid reviews, I would have bought the 3D3 A1112's instead of the Panasonic's.

the 3D3 A1111 are £10 more expensive because they have both bluetooth and IR receivers.

the new tv's only use bluetooth, so you don't need to buy them, but say you have an older 3D tv in the house with IR you would buy these so you can use it with both tv's.

basically the A1111 isn't the one most people would buy because the IR receiver is now redundant.

the 3D3 glasses have had rave reviews over at avforums.

the main advantage is they let in less background light (they fit better blocking out light from the sides) and therefore give you a better image.

it's weird to see anyone paying money for panny's own glasses because they are so expensive, especially since panny, sammy and sony combined together 2 years back to come up with a standard for 3d glasses.

therefore sammy, panny and sony glasses all work on each other sets flawlessly.

and with the sammy glasses being £14.99 in the popular high street stores, they are the go to option for guy's who just simply want 3d glasses, for guy's who want the best they usually get 3d3 ones which cost less than panny's normal glasses.

i have panny glasses, as well as sammy glasses, both came free with my tv's otherwise i would have bought 3d3 ones.

honestly though i only use 3d like once in a blue moon.

i may try and watch a footy match in 3d next weekend or something though, sports arena say it's not worth it but i may as well try it out since i have sky 3d and the sports package and a 3d tv.

if i were you i would return the glasses and get 3d3 if you want better ones or get the sammy's if you want to save cash.

head over to avforums, if you want more info on them or your panny.

Ok you have me convinced. I'll cancel the order on the Panny glasses, and get the 3D3 A1112's instead :)

i had a line of dead pixels on the st60. but they didnt have any in stock for a replacement. so paid the extra for the gt.

honestly i think its very much worth it. but the st60s picture was (as far as i could tell) just as good. its the extras that are great.

check it out:

also 2 pairs of glasses rather than one is a nice extra.

Cool, am like a little kid waiting for Christmas. The weekend can't come quick enough, can't wait to pick it up and get it setup etc :D

the ST60 has a huge amount of input lagg compared to the GT60 which is a big problem if you occasionally game on the tv too.

Always make sure you select "game" mode too when gaming which basically turns off all unnecessary features to further decrease lagg.

they intentionally made the ST60 worse this year because the year before the ST50 was actually the best when it came to input lagg and the difference in PQ was minimal so a lot of people just bought the ST50.

if you want to make your tv look even better for less than £25 as well as reduce eye strain and have a cool looking TV, search for BIAS lighting on this forum, i have made a few posts about it as well as the remote controlled dimmable setup I bought off ebay for less than £25.

well worth buying at that price tbh, it adds so much for so little.

the tricky part is getting it to stick to the back of the TV , i just used tons of cellotape in the end, the back of the tv looks terrible, but nobody will ever see it, so i don't care.
