Panorama - Wifi ate my hamster

Surely things need to wait? Mobile phones havent been around long enough to see if they can cause health problems. I.e; wait until little kid of 11 using their mobile has brain cancer or something when they're 40 :)

It'll be radiation in iPod's next lol.
Well I titter in the general direction of anyone that uses an ipod or mobile phone whilst its in their jean pocket. They're going to grow up sterile!

There has been research done and it found that mobile phones don't increase the risk of cancer. Linky

Even Cancer Research UK says mobile phones are ok. Linky

Although I do agree that longer term research needs to be done, I don't think that the verdict is going to change.

I used to work in the Mobile phone mast industry (designing mast sites!) and had to attend a lot of Local authority meetings... this was about the time when Every other program on the telly and even Which were saying that Masts and Phones were gonna Coock your brain if you came within 2 miles of either!...

Three statistics that have stuck in my memory from those meeting are:

1) A TV Transmitter tower outputs between 10 and 50 times the Wattage/Radiation than you average 25m Phone mast!.
2) The radiation from a Phone Mast acts like an umerella!, You won't get any effects (or signal for that matter) when standing underneath it!, The Radiation touches ground (if the terrane is flat) about 750-1250m away (25m Mast) and then its at such a level that its totally harmless!!.

and Finally (this one shocked me)..

3) A Baby Monitor that people place near thair Child's Cribs/Beds without question outputs about 3-4 times the radiation level of a mobile phone would in the same situation!!!...

So if a Wifi Network is 'milliwatts' compared to your average Mobile Phone Mast... Whats the panic about!!!... Flippin Scaremongers in the Beeb/Media!..

Not gonna stop me using my Wireless Network whilst Phoning my mate on my Mobile and watching 'Ready Steady Cook' on the Telly!! :D

Aren't bumble bees being eradicated due to mobile phones? Messes up their pathfinding abilities apparently :( Explains why you see more and more of them on a plant or on the ground looking totally confused.

Apparently that was a major misinterpretation by the media - who didn't even bother to consult the people who wrote the paper they cited as a source.

http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/04/22/news/wireless23.php

Their research was apparently done around DECT phones, not mobiles anyway.

From BBC news "The readings were 600 times below the government's safety limits"

Not 6 times, not even 60 times but 600 times lower, Says it all tbh!

I really, really, really hope it isn't the school that I installed a large WLAN network in a few months ago.... :(

I would'nt worry. You only installed it. Its only the school thats going to have to answer questions from parents.

I'm listening to Radio 1 all day today, and they keep saying that the power measured was higher than that of mobile phone radiation. I'm still at a loss as to how they made that conclusion:

ISM bands (2.4 GHz being one of them) are limited to ~100mW. The mobile you shove next to your ear is ~2W. 20 times the power.

Unless they measured radiation right next to an access point and measured the background radiation from a mobile phone mast at the same point?

Taking into account the inverse square law, the radiation exposed is likely to be 3/5 of bugger all. I'm not surprised by the 600 times less than Govt. Safety requirements in the slightest.

yeah mW figures are fairly pointless. What counts is the typical irradiance, i.e. mW per cm squared.

The Sun (the star not the newspaper) puts out ridiculous wattage, but we don't poop ourselves over that all day because it's so damn far away.

Can anyone give me a very good reason why microwaves don't escape through the holes in the microwave door?

I can't think of any physics why they wouldn't diffract out? and I'm a second year physicist at uni!! with an exam in 2 days!!

I presume the glass has some sort of coating on it?

Obviously I know its a faraday cage, and the plasma frequency of the metal cage is too low for 2.4ghz EM penetration. So no need to point that out!

sid

Edit ;; Wavelength of Microwaves is much larger than holes so they don't penetrate it.

This is what it don't get.

Do these people think that kids are gonna hold laptops at their heads or sit with their face right in front of an access point.

I can't believe that its got far enough to warrant all this coverage, especially considering that phones don't cause problems. Not to mention the fact that we've been bombarded with all sorts of radiation for years and no one seems to care.

This is just plain and simple scaremongering by people who have got nothing better to do with their lives.
